More than 55,000 people have been buried at the cemetery since it opened (as Riverview) in 1891. Roselawn Cemetery: In the beginning Riverview Cemetery was created in 1891 by the Pueblo Cemetery Association when 18 shareholders contracted to purchase 350 acres from the Colorado Coal and Iron Co. The burial rate was $5 for adults, $4 for children under 12 and $3 for children under 3. The cemetery association purchased 2,000 trees from Dittmer Orchards for 30 to 40 cents per tree. In 1892 the Daily Chieftain printed a story that credited the founders for "giving Pueblo a cemetery which should be a park to be proud of." In 1895, the cemetery bought a wagonette from the Stewart Wagon Co. for $350. The wagon seated 10 passengers and provided transportation from the city to the cemetery on weekends from April through September. For a fare of 15 cents for adults and 10 cents for children, Puebloans were driven to visit grave sites and to picnic on the grounds. In 1905, Riverview was renamed Roselawn (for the many roses present on the grounds) after the acreage was reduced, meaning the cemetery's land would never stretch all the way to the banks of the Arkansas River as was first envisioned.
