News item: 1899 Inn named to National Register
The 1899 Inn, formerly the Lamme Hospital, has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places according to an announcement by the Colorado Historical Society.
The hospital was constructed in 1909 to be the home of Peter Smith and his wife. However, before its completion in December of that year, the Smiths traded homes with La Veta Doctor S. Julian Lamme.
Lamme grew up in southern Colorado mining camps and communities, attended Huerfano County High School in Walsenburg and obtained his medical degree in 1904 from the University of Colorado.
He opened his medical practice in LaVeta in 1904. After obtaining the stone building on Main Street, he used it as a residence as well as a medical office.
Julian's younger brother, James, joined the practice in 1911.
During the 1918 influenza epidemic, the Lammes converted the building to a hospital and added an operating room upstairs.
The Lamme brothers moved their practice to Walsenburg in 1919, selling the hospital to A.J. Chisolm. A succession of doctors operated the facility through the early 1940's when it reverted to a private residence.
The National Register is the official list of the nation's cultural resources worthy of preservation. It is administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior and the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation at the Colorado Historical Society.
The Inn joins other historic buildings in La Veta, such as Francisco Fort Museum and La Veta High School, on the list.
