She was 83 years of age. Opal was born Feb. 10, 1921, in Gardner, Colo., the younger of two children born to Mary Kindt Jarrell and Robert N. Jarrell. In addition to her sister, Ruth Alice Jarrell, she had six older brothers and sisters who were born to her mother and her mother's first husband, Friedrich "Fred" Wilhelm Youch (Jauch), prior to Fred's death. They were John Harry, Gertrude Augusta, Richard, Della Marie, Hattie Rose and Arthur Charles Youch. Opal graduated from Gardner High School in 1939. She married Hyrum Anderson Mead on Dec. 26, 1941. They were later sealed in the Logan Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After Hyrum completed his service in the U. S. Army during World War II, they resided in Pueblo, Colo., before moving to Rye in 1957. They had six children and were married for 63 years. They have 22 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Opal's life was one of love and devotion to her husband and children. Her soft-spoken and compassionate nature touched the lives of many, but most especially the lives of her family members. She was thrifty and skilled as a seamstress and frequently utilized these talents to beautify her home and bless those around her. She enjoyed music and played the piano. She was also known for her beautiful penmanship and for her careful recordkeeping. Opal had a love for the gospel of Jesus Christ and served faithfully in many church positions as a leader and teacher. She and her husband were instrumental in the establishment of a branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rye. Despite many challenges, including the death of her infant daughter and a stroke, she faced her life with courage and faithfully endured. Throughout the 17 years of her serious illness following her stroke, she was lovingly cared for by her devoted husband and eternal companion, Hyrum. Opal is survived by her husband, Hyrum; sister, Hattie Ranky of Washington; and children, Hyrum Anderson (Rosemary) Mead Jr., North Salt Lake, Utah, Colleen Joy (David) Evensen, Shelley, Idaho, Delaine Joyce (Robert Kent) Shifflet, Rye, Colo., Nola Jean (Reid) Swenson, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Carl Wayne (Patricia "Penny") Mead, Kaysville, Utah.
