My Grandmother by Laura Read - Huerfano World - December 2, 1999 - My story is about an 86 year old woman who is young at heart and mind. During the 18 years I've known her, I have found her to be stubborn at times but also very kind and considerate. This is my grandma Amada Gonzalez. When I think of my grandma, the word feisty comes to mind. I think of this because she is always going against the grind. When she should be home, she is gone visiting friends. She is always fixing up things around her yard herself instead of asking for help. If she has an idea in her head, no one can change it. This is what makes her so fun to be around. Grandma has taught me to fix things easily and she has told me stories of her experiences that happened to her on her family's farm when she was a little girl. I always remember when I was younger, we would both get up early in the morning and make breakfast together. After we ate we would fix the bed and clean her house. When we were done, we would never stay home; she always had something to do up her sleeve. We played games, went for walks in the garden, or we just drove around town together. My grandma knows a lot for only attending school up to the fifth grade. Her home was on a farm where there was always work to be done. She could only go to school when she was finished with her chores. She has taught me some of the things she used to do on her farm like; weed gardens, care for people that are sick, and help animals that are hurt. I like the way that my grandma always takes care of me when I am sick. I also like the way that she tries to sneak me some candy when no one else is looking. She always has fun things to do. We used to play frisbee, race to the end of her long driveway, and wash her car on the hot summer days. Grandma is never sitting still, she is always up doing something. One of the things we both like to do is to go shopping at the store for groceries. We used to buy cakes and sandwiches for picnics in her front yard. I have spent a lot of time with my grandma. She has been a very special person in my life and I hope she will never change.

She was born in Gardner on Mar. 24, 1951 to John and Virginia Rodriquez. Survivors include her husband, Mario Gonzales of Carrizo Springs, TX; her three sons, James Kent "Horton" (Jody), John "Louie" (Diana) and Mario "Toner"; her daughter, Julia; her mother, Virginia; her stepfather, Augustine Trujillo; her brothers, John (Donna), Frank, Fred (Geri) and Max (LeCita); her in-laws, Tony and Dorothy Gonzales; her sister-in-law, Ramona; her two grandchildren, Sofia and Geronimo; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceding Gloria in death were her father, John "Zeke" Rodriquez; and her first husband, Kent Camp- bell. Gloria was born and raised in Gardner, a community she loved dearly and would remember for the rest of her life. As the eldest daughter of a tight-knit family, Gloria loved ranch life and realized her passion for teaching others. While raising her two boys, Horton and Louie, she attended Adams State College in Alamosa, where she graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Education. After marrying Mario in 1982, they moved to San Carlos, AZ, where she taught second and third grade for nine years on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. In 1993, the family moved to Carrizo Springs, TX where her two youngest children, Julia and Toner graduated high school and went on to attend Yale and Texas A&M. As a first grade teacher at North Elementary for 13 years, she gave six and seven-year-olds the gifts of learning to read, write, count and share. Though she often battled the effects of diabetes, her inner strength and composure were perhaps only surpassed by the love and devotion of her husband 'Mario' who took care of her through both good days and bad. Gloria loved four things: her family, her students, her friends and the mountains of Colorado. We loved Gloria for who she was and for the many titles she held: a dedicated wife, a tender daughter, sister and mother; a fiercely independent woman and a Twice-honored Teacher of the Year. A beautiful funeral service was held in Gardner on Feb. 7, 2004. Gloria was buried alongside her father in the Chama Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Boies-Ortega Funeral Home in Walsenburg. A memorial service will be held in Carrizo Springs on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004.
