Martin Cubich - Huerfano World - January 19, 1989 - This Week in La Veta History - 1944: Died, Martin Cubich, 44-year-old Yugoslavia native who had been in La Veta ten years and was owner of the Silver Dollar.

Cuchiara, Charles R.
Charles R. Cuchiara - Pueblo Chieftain - February 02, 2003 - Charles R. Cuchiara, a prominent lifetime Pueblo resident of 77 years, passed away Jan. 30, 2003, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Cuchiara was well known in Pueblo for his lifetime of music and his Serenaders Orchestra. He was the owner and proprietor of Pennies Tavern for 35 years. Graduate of Central High School and member of the football team. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard where he served during WWII. A member of Christ the King parish and a longtime member of Pueblo Elks Lodge No. 90 and the Eagles Lodge, No. 145. His greatest pleasures in life were his music and family, especially his seven grandchildren. Charles is preceded in death by parents, Modesto and Anna Cuchiara; and mother-in-law, Mary Moroney. Survived by his wife of 53 years, Nell (Moroney) Cuchiara, of the family home; four children, Charles R. (Sandy) Cuchiara, Golden, Colo., Dennis (Darlene) Cuchiara, Pueblo, Kenny (Susan) Cuchiara, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Marianne (Perry) Everett, Alamosa, Colo.; two sisters, Marie Fabian and Kate (Pete) Santarelli of Pueblo; seven grandchildren, Anthony, Andrea, Michael, Alyssa Cuchiara, Spencer, Audrey and Marlo Everett. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation, 2 to 5 p.m. today, at the funeral home. Recitation of the rosary, 7 p.m. this evening, Christ The King Catholic Church. Funeral Mass, 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, Christ the King Catholic Church with entombment to follow, Roselawn Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions in memory of Charles R. Cuchiara to the American Diabetes Association through the funeral home office. The family extends a special thank you to the Northside Kidney Dialysis Center and Dr. Stephen Vialpando for their care and compassion.

Cuckow, Francis J.
Francis J. Cuckow - Colorado Springs Gazette - May 12, 1992 - Francis J. Cuckow, 81, of Colorado Springs died May 10, 1992, at a local nursing home. He was a clerk for the 4th Judicial District Court before retiring. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home's Chapel of Roses, with the Revs. Jerry L. Kelly and James Smith officiating. Entombment will be at Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum. Shrine of Remembrance is handling arrangements. Mr. Cuckow was born April 15, 1911, in Brookings, S.D., to Fredrick W. and Mary Edith (Thornber) Cuckow. He had lived in Colorado Springs since 1947 and also had lived in Craig and Pueblo. He was a Colorado College graduate and a member of the Winter Night Club, Colorado College Alumni Association, Kiwanis, First Presbyterian Church and Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District. Mr. Cuckow was married Aug. 30, 1933, in Colorado Springs to Elizabeth E. Earls, who is deceased. He is survived by two sons, Francis C. of Trinidad and Fred E. of Belize; a daughter, Sharon E. Kelly of Midland, Texas; and four grandchildren. He had a brother, Lloyd R., who is deceased. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pioneers Museum, 215 S. Tejon St., Colorado Springs 80903.

Cudjo, Reba Mae
Reba Mae Cudjo - Pueblo Chieftain - November 21, 1999 - Reba Mae Cudjo, 87, longtime Pueblo resident, passed away Nov. 15, 1999, at University Park Care Center. Born on April 12, 1912, in Rockwood, Tenn., she was the second of six children of the late John and Nellie Ewing. During World War II, Reba worked at CF&I. She married her second husband, Sam Cudjo in 1974. Together they enjoyed traveling throughout the country. Her husband, Sam, precedes her in death; also her parents; siblings, Raymond, Tommy, George, Ed, and Mack Ewing, Emma Saunders; great-granddaughter, Natasha Marie Benjamin. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved daughter, RoseMary Benjamin; devoted son-in-law, whom she referred to as a son because he did so much to help her, Orville Boyd Benjamin; sister, Permila (Johnny Elbeck Sr.); grandchildren, Jovan, LaQuisha, Antwion, LeNeia, Darlana, and Darwin Benjamin Jr., DeAna Ayala Benjamin, Laurie Ayala Benjamin, Joaquin Burch Benjamin, Jamil Benjamin; great-grandson, Nathaniel Gene Bonner; nieces and nephews, Cheryl Blackwell, JoAnn Conners, Barbara Williams, Forrest Elbeck, Anthony and Virgil Ewing, and their families; special friend, Hosie Lewis. Visitation, 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. today, Angelus Chapel. Funeral service, 1 p.m. Tuesday, Evangelist Church of God In Christ, 1148 Cedar Street, Pastor Raymond Blackwell officiating. Interment, Imperial Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends at the church hall following the burial rites.

Cuicello, Eleanor V.
Eleanor V. Cuicello - Albuquerque Journal - January 10, 2004 - Eleanor V. Cuicello (Ortega), 97, a longtime resident of Moriarty, passed away Dec. 30 at a home for the aged in Albuquerque. Eleanor is survived by sons Louis N. Ortega and Byrdell L. Ortega, both of California, Leonard C. Ortega of Albuquerque, and Edmund J. Ortega of Moriarty; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands Louis Ortega and Joseph Cuicello. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 13 at Holy Trinity Church in Trinidad, Colo.

Culbertson, Alfred W.
Alfred W. "Bud" Culbertson - Pueblo Chieftain - December 01, 2005 - Alfred W. "Bud" Culbertson, 83, passed away Nov. 28, 2005. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; two sisters; his wife, Phyllis; and his daughter, Robin Culbertson. He is survived by two daughters, Sylvia Turner and Rochelle (John) Culbertson; grandson, James Turner; and his son, James Ryan; granddaughter, Jennifer Turner; her wife, Tina Mayo; and their daughters, Tracy and Katie. At his request, there will be cremation with no viewing. A cookie pot luck in Bud's memory will be held 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at the Community of Christ, 66 Blackburn Lane.

Culbertson, Georgia
Georgia Culbertson - Pueblo Chieftain - January 13, 2005 - Georgia Culbertson, 98, passed away Jan. 9, 2005. She is preceded in death by her parents, Clem and Jane Sayhouse; sisters, Dorothy Razor and Helen Wemlinger; and brother, Claude Razor. Survived by her husband, Sidney Culbertson, Pueblo; brother, Robert (Mary) Razor, Denver; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives. Georgia was a longtime Denver and Pueblo resident. She was a member of the Northern Avenue Methodist Church and was currently a member of Wesley United Methodist Church of Pueblo. She worked for Dr. Grove's dental practice in Denver for many years, was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and worked for Gordon Scott Fuel in Pueblo. In addition, she was a past president of the Spark Plug Club of the CF&I Steel in Pueblo and was a seamstress for many years. Cremation, with a memorial service, 3 p.m. Saturday, Wesley United Methodist Church.

Culbertson, Marvin
Marvin Waldon Culbertson - Pueblo Chieftain - June 13, 2002 - Marvin Waldon Culbertson, born Jan. 11, 1924, in Colorado Springs, Colo., went home peacefully to be with the Lord June 10, 2002. Preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lucille (Sheets) Culbertson; and his nephew, Kippard Dale Moore. He is survived by his brother, C. Wendell (Arlene) Culbertson of Casper, Wyo.; and his sister, Alta (John) Moore of Pueblo West. He is dearly loved and will be missed by his nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Marvin enlisted in the U.S. Navy April 1, 1941, and was honorably discharged the 20th day of January, 1943, as Seaman 1st Class by reason of service-related medical disability. He was a longtime member of Pueblo Christian Center and faithfully served as an usher. Marvin was a loving person who cared for everybody, was always gracious and generous to all. He enjoyed buying electric trains and toys to share with his nephews and great-nephews. Visitation, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday. Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Pueblo Christian Center, 1605 S. Pueblo Blvd. with Rev. Richard Emerson officiating. Interment, Garden of Singing Tower, Imperial Memorial Gardens, with military honors presented by the Pueblo Veterans Ritual Team. The family wishes to thank the caregivers and staff of the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home and Dr. Neece and Dr. Williams and nurses of Spanish Peaks Medical Center in Walsenburg, Colo., who cared for Marvin. In lieu of food and flowers, donations may be made to Pueblo Christian Center or the charity of choice in his memory.

Phyllis I. Culbertson - Pueblo Chieftain - August 18, 2002 - Phyllis I. Culbertson, passed away Aug. 16, 2002. She is preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Robin K. Culbertson, 2000. Phyllis is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Alfred Culbertson of Pueblo; daughters, Sylvia Turner, Pueblo, Sheli Culbertson, Illinois; grandchildren, James (Carol) Turner, Jennifer Turner, both of Pueblo. Also survived by two sisters. Memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at Community of Christ Church, 66 Blackburn Lane, Pueblo.

Culbreath, Mary Esther
Mary Esther Culbreath - Huerfano World - April 29, 1999 - Mary Esther Culbreath, 81, of La Veta, died April 24, 1999 in the Walsenburg Care Center where she had been a resident for the past five years. Mrs. Culbreath was born on October 11, 1917 in Madison County, Iowa to Walter Ward and Blanche Ruth Travis King. Mrs. Culbreath is survived by her children, Robert (Nancy) Culbreath, Gill, Greg (Nancye) Culbreath, La Veta, Terry Culbreath, Garden City, KS, Nancy Culbreath, La Veta; sisters, Carolyn Bugg, Wichita, KS, and Doris Richardson, Hemet, CA; grandchildren, Kathy Yarger, Justin Culbreath, Kristi Glover, Erin Culbreath, Mark Culbreath, Tanner Culbreath, Trevor Culbreath, numerous nieces and nephews. Culig, Mary M.
Mary M. Culig - Pueblo Chieftain - September 15, 2004 - Mary M. Culig, 91, passed away Sept. 11, 2004. She was born Jan. 30, 1913, in Pueblo. Preceded in death by parents, John and Anna Sajbel; husband, Stanley; sister, Irene; brothers, Robert and John; and special friend, Catherine Lay. She is survived by five sons, Tom (Sue) Culig, Karl (Pam) Culig, Stanley W. Culig Jr., Brian (Connie) Culig and Gary (Kathy) Culig; two daughters, Martha Culig and Kathy (Tom) Mickey; grandchildren, Sarah, Aaron, Beth, Amanda and Gary Culig and Mike and Trina Rocha and sons, Sean and Marc. Also survived by two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Ed and Bonnie Sajbel, Dr. Joe and Shirley Sajbel and Frances Sajbel. Mary's greatest joy in life was being with her family and friends. Her house was filled with pictures of them. She never missed a party and often was the last to leave. She loved to cook. She was a great board game player (usually won). She graduated from St. Patrick's high school and was initially a stenographer. She was an accomplished pianist in her younger years. Her laugh and sense of humor were with her until the day she died. She will be greatly missed by all. Cullen, James Joseph
James Joseph Cullen - Pueblo Chieftain - June 14, 1999 - James Joseph Cullen, the ninth of twelve children was born to James Joseph and Sarah Elizabeth (nee Hoffman) Cullen on Oct. 4, 1915, in Boyero, Colo. He departed this life on June 12, 1999, at home. All throughout his life he worked as a contractor and became the proprietor of Cullen Construction, where he established a reputation as an honest, hardworking individual. James, "Jim," married Frances Pittullo on Feb. 17, 1939, in Victor, Colo. Eleven children were born to this union. They made their home in Pueblo. He was devoted to his wife and children, working to provide for them and their education. After retirement in 1980, he continued to help his son, John, at his business. Jim was a member of Christ The King Church. He is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife, Frances- sons and their families, Jim and Mary Ann Cullen of Flagstaff, Ariz., John and Carol Cullen and Chris and Sylvia Cullen of Pueblo, Jerry and Judy Cullen of Ashland, Kan., Ken and Ruthann Cullen of Lamar, Colo., Mike Cullen of Nashville, Tenn., Pat and Pam Cullen of Alliance, Neb.- daughters, Enid Mazzone of Madison, Fla., Mary Annand Fred Gillig of Kiowa, Kan., Kate and Jim Homolka of Claflin, Kan., and Elizabeth Cullen of Los Angeles, Calif.- as well as 29 grandchildren and 10great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Preceded in death by his parents- two brothers, John and Leon Cullen and five sisters, Catheryn Loss, Margaret Scott, Emily Weber, Nellie Moran and Alice Pursley. Four sisters survive, Eva Strawn of Hutchinson, Kan., Rosanna Tarman and Agnes Foley of Lamar, Colo., and Angie Hirsh of Pratt, Kan., along with sister-in-law, Sarah Cullen of Kit Carson, Colo. He will lie in state at the funeral home today from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 5p.m. Services will be held at Christ The King Church, 1708 Horseshoe Dr., with the Rosary at 7 p.m. Tuesday and the Funeral Mass 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 16,1999 . Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Those who desire, may make memorials to The Wayside Cross Mission or Sangre de Cristo Hospice through the funeral home.

William A. Cullen - Pueblo Chieftain - June 05, 2000 - William A. Cullen, of Pueblo, passed away June 2, 2000. He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Leona Cullen. He is survived by his sister, Martha "Marty" Cullen; and his brother, Mike Cullen. A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 8, 2000, at 10 a.m. at Adrian Comer Garden Chapel.

Culpin, Richard R.
Richard R. Culpin - Pueblo Chieftain - October 24, 2004 - Richard R. Culpin, born May 22, 1926 in Boston, Mass. Died Oct. 20, 2004 at St. Mary Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, Colo. Preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Culpin, brothers Charles Culpin and John J. Culpin, and son Mark Culpin. Survived by his wife, Jeannie, daughters Kathleen (Steven) Ebeling of Superior, Colo., Rebecca (Barry) Reynolds of Cincinnati, Ohio, Deborah (Russ) Jolly of Richardson, Texas, and son Kenneth Culpin of Cincinnati, Ohio, grandchildren Joshua and Daniel Ebeling, Jessica and Erin Reynolds, sister Clare M. Culpin, and brother-in-law Sonny Sweeten. Rich served his Country in the infantry in World War II, came west in 1947, met Jeannie Sweeten Camerlo, fell in love, and married her in 1952.Rich's career with the Andrew Jergens Company spanned 30 years, starting as a salesman and rising to the position of Vice-President, Sales before his retirement in 1991. After retirement Rich and Jeannie moved to Santa Fe, N.M. then to Wetmore, Colo., Jeannie's place of birth. Rich enjoyed playing tennis, fishing, and traveled world wide during his retirement. Rich was a fantastic cook who prepared and served the Thanksgiving turkey nearly every one of his fifty two years of marriage. He never shunned a challenge, and could fix anything. Rich was a beloved and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a devout Christian and committed to His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Florence, Colo. at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct., 23, 2004, followed by burial at the New Hope Cemetery in Wetmore. Cumbee, Lynn C.
Lynn C. Cumbee - Pueblo Chieftain - April 01, 2001 - Lynn C. Cumbee, 50, passed away March 29, 2001, in Pueblo. Born Feb. 23, 1951, in Danville, Va. and raised in Williamsburg, Va. Loving wife, mother and grandmother, she is survived by her devoted soulmate and husband, Richard; daughters, Leigh and Melanie; grandsons, Joshua and Noah (soon to be born)mother, Juanita Chambers; brother, Al Chambers; sister, Deborah Gambrell; and several nieces and nephews. A Pueblo resident since 1990, Lynn was a retail manager by occupation. She spread her love and time through countless hours working for nonprofit and civic organizations. However, her family was the passion of her life. Now a beautiful angel of the Lord, Lynn has arisen to Heaven, with wings spun from the undying love of her family, where she will watch and protect us eternally. At her request, cremation with no service. The family respectfully requests no food or flowers. A small gathering of family and close friends will take place soon. Cumming, Mary V.
Mary V. Cumming - Pueblo Chieftain - March 10, 2006 - Mary V. Cumming, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 4, 2006. She was born in Trickham, Texas, on March 14, 1924, to Louis and Maud Burney. She was preceded in death by her parents; and by her husband, George A. Cumming, Jr., a Pueblo firefighter. Mary was the little sister of four brothers, all of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by Cortni Kelly Cumming, her beloved granddaughter. She is survived by her son, Bob (Linda); and her daughter, Linda (Paul Phillips). She was the proud grandmother of Nicole, Patrick, Alex and Paige. She was the great-grandmother to Nicolas and Jaron, twin sons of Cortni; and Cortni Taylor, daughter of Nicole. Her first job was to collect eggs in the morning and bring home the cows at night. When she was raising her family in Pueblo, she was an office administrator for a group of physicians. She was always a full-time mother, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is loved dearly and will be missed by many. Her family will hold a graveside memorial service at Mountain View Cemetery in Pueblo at a later date. Cummings, Florence
Florence Cummings - Huerfano World - June 6, 1991 - Memorial service for Florence. (Flo) Cummings, 93, of La Veta, will be Saturday from La Veta Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Mrs. Cummings died Saturday, June 1, 1991, in St. Mary Corwin Hospital in Pueblo. She was the widow of the late Lewis A. Cummings, district ranger for San Isabel National Forest from 1942 until his retirement in 1960. Mrs. Cummings taught in La Veta grade school for seven years. She was the sole remaining charter member of Spanish Peaks Garden Club. Survivors include her daughter, Constance Lou Jones, Denver; one grandson and one great-grandson. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Cuchara Valley Emergency Volunteers.

Cummings, Jim
Jim Cummings - Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home – April 2003 - Jim Cummings was called home to his ranch in God's Green Acres on March 31, 2003 after a lengthy illness at the Trinidad State Nursing Home. Jim was born September 6, 1911 in Trinidad to James and Johanna Cummings. Jim was a lifelong Hoehne/Trinidad area rancher where he worked and ran the Cummings Ranch until health problems caused him to retire in 2000. Jim served as president of the Southern Colorado Livestock Association in 1950-51, was currently a member of the Las Animas County Livestock Association, served as a member of the Trinidad Round-Up Association, Hoehne School Board, Soil Conservation Service, San Isabel Electric Association, Sunflower Valley Pipeline, Colorado Cattlemen's Association, American National Cattlemen's Association, past Master of the Trinidad Mason #28 AF&AM, member of the Knights of the Templar, Scheiners (Al Kaly Consistory #3, Pueblo) and was a board member of the First National Bank. Jim is an honorary member of the Hoehne FFA Chapter and the Las Animas County 4-H Council. Jim spent most of his life serving on various boards in the Las Animas County area to help in any way he could to better the area. Jim was instrumental in getting electricity and water to the south side of the Sunflower Valley. Jim was a good ole gentleman cowboy & stockman who loved the land, his cattle, horses, and especially his family. Jim was united in marriage to Mima McDonald on June 18, 1939, who survives his loving memory along with his loving children: son Don and wife Vonnie of Trinchera, daughter Sue of Fort Collins, and his pride and joy, grandson Cameron of Trinidad. Also surviving his memory are sister-in-law Jeanie Dryden of Denver, nephew Jack (Mary) Dryden of Denver, nephew James Brandt (Sharon) of Houston, TX, nieces, Janice (Steve) Haberman, Jo Ellen (David) Weatherhold, and nephew John Speilman all of Alaska. Jim's memory will also be cherished by his extended family at Fishers Peak Assisted Care and Trinidad State Nursing Home, many dear friends and co-workers. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James & Johanna, sisters, Ellen Donnelly, Janet Brandt and Beth Speilman, sister-in-law Annie McDonald, brother-in-law Forrest Dryden, Forrest Brandt and John Speilman. Gary Lynn Cummins - Pueblo Chieftain - February 20, 2002 - Age 53, born May 26, 1948, in Levelland, Texas, passed away Feb. 18, 2002. He was a faithful employee of Sam's Wholesale Club for 15 years. Preceded in death by his oldest son, Michael D. Cummins. Survived by his wife of 29 years, Sharon J. Cummins; daughter, Vicki (Jesus) Cummins-Lopez; son, Randall Cummins; and special granddaughters, Savannah Cummins and Aubriana Lopez; parents, Buford and Patricia Cummins of Dumas, Texas; brothers, Larry (Judy) Cummins of Pueblo West, Terry (Denise) Cummins of Dumas, Texas; and sister, Connie (Kenny) Cline of Somanauk, Ill.; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Gary was an active member of New Heights Baptist, where he served as deacon. He enjoyed fishing, football, reading, computer, playing games, spending time with his wife, kids and spoiling his grandchildren. Angelo Natale Cunico - Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home – February 2004 Angelo Natale Cunico, 93, passed away on February 8, 2003. He was born on December 25, 1909 in Arsiero, Italy, to John B. Cunico and Maria (Borgo) Cunico. He came to America at age four. He married Caroline Lira, November 4, 1933, at Holy Trinity Church. The couple celebrated 69 years of marriage. He worked as a coal miner and retired as a foreman from the Allen Mine in 1970. He enjoyed bowling, working crossword puzzles, making latch hook rugs and talking on his CB radio. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Crist and Louis, sisters Catherine Maccagnan, Ann Lira, Julia Butero, and daughter-in-law Roberta Cunico. He is survived by his wife Caroline, daughters Pat (Charles) Festi, Trinidad, sons Gerald (Laura) Cunico, Albuquerque, N.M., John (Lucille) Cunico, Lakeland, Minn. and Gaeta, Italy, sister Esther Sebben, seven grandchildren, Steve (Audrey) Cunico, Japan, Jim and Jeff (Jennifer) Cunico, all of Albuquerque, Tony (Tina) Festi, Austin, Gina Festi- Gitano, Trinidad, Johnny Cunico, St. Paul, Minn. and Mary Angela (Andy) Neibler, Milwaukee, Wis., 13 great grandchildren, sisters and brothers-in-law, Ermen (Anna) Lira, Pearl Lira, Angie Cunico, Mary (Pena) Cunico, Mike Butero and numerous nieces and nephews. Cunningham, Jesse
Jesse Cunningham – Greenhorn Valley News – May 16, 2003 – “JCody” Succumbs to Illness – Popular From Hither to Yon columnist, Jesse Cunningham, once advised readers to “live your life, as when it comes time for reading your obituary, those present will not be mistaken as to whose service they attended.” Jesse, who signed his column “JCody”, passed away Saturday, May 10 during a courageous effort to recover from lung surgery. He was 72. “He seemed to be holding his own last week,” said daughter Cindy Pierson, “but gradually things became worse.” Cindy wanted to assure his many friends that he passed away peacefully. Jesse lived his life impacting people. Whether it be through his art, writing, music, personable and loving character, unique appearance, or his outspoken love for his family (especially granddaughter Haley), Jesse was well known in a community he loved very much. Although his immediate family lived in Oklahoma and Texas, Jesse valued his “extended family” made up of countless residents from Colorado City and Rye. Jesse, whose birth name was Jesse Morgan Cunningham, was born May 19, 1930 in Forgan, Oklahoma to Roy Morgan and Essie Mae (Strickland) Cunningham. He graduated from high school and became and editor and publisher of an Oklahoma newspaper. He married Jean Boren on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1948 in Beaver, OK. Jean passed away in August 1971. Jesse is survived by his son, Mike Cunningham of Lubbock, TX; his daughter Cindy Pierson of Beaver, OK; one brother Lowell Cunningham; two sisters, Rita Royce Reed and Lois Reeves; grandchildren Mica (Scott) Turner of Little Rock AK; and Haley Pierson of Beaver, OK, and a host of other relatives and friends. Graveside Funeral services for Jesse are scheduled for Saturday, May 17, 11 a.m. (10 a.m. Colorado time) at the Pioneer Cemetery in Beaver. Everyone who attends is invited to a dinner in Jesse's honor following the services.

Cunningham, Leon Donald
Leon Donald (Lon) Cunningham - Pueblo Chieftain - January 28, 2004 - Doctor Leon Donald (Lon) Cunningham was born Aug. 23, 1940 in Loup City, Neb. to Lester (Babe) Cunningham and Gwendolyn (Gwen) Cunningham. He passed away on Jan. 21, 2004 in his home in Colorado Springs, Colo. at the age of 63. Lon grew up in Ansley, Neb. attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and the University of Nebraska School of Medicine in Omaha, Neb. He interned at Lincoln General Hospital in Lincoln, Neb. He served as flight surgeon in the United States Air Force and was in general practice in Buffalo, Wyo. Lon completed his residency in Dermatology at the University of Iowa School of Medicine in Iowa City and came to Colorado Springs in 1974 to practice dermatology with Doctor Larry Cole at the Colorado Springs Dermatology Clinic in Colorado Springs and in Pueblo until his retirement in 2001. Lon was a member of the El Paso County Medical Society and served as president in 1988-89. He was also a member of the Colorado Medical Society, Colorado Springs Dermatology Society, Colorado Dermatology Society, American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and American Medical Association. Lon married Sharon Bartlett on June 17, 1962. Lon and Sharon raised three children, Andy Cunningham, Ann Cunningham Smith and James Cunningham. Lon's great love of the out doors was passed on to his family. His passion was fishing and he found pleasure in teaching others to fish. He loved Nebraska football, played a mean game of poker, and rarely lost a bet. Lon was destined to be a caregiver and followed that path through life. He was dedicated to the old fashioned practice of medicine. Friends and family were important to him. His sense of humor, his tall tales, his generosity, and his caring will be remembered fondly by all those he touched. He was preceded in death by his parents, Babe and Gwen Cunningham. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, son Andrew Scott Cunningham and wife, Cinda; Ann Cunningham Smith and her husband, Tim; and James Cunningham and his wife Kristin; grandchildren Shelby and Andie Kay Cunningham and Elizabeth and Michael Smith. Cunningham, Mabel May
Mabel May Cunningham - Pueblo Chieftain - March 29, 2006 - Mabel May Cunningham passed away at the Life Care Center of Pueblo on Mar. 24, 2006 at the age of 96. Mabel was born at Center, Colo. on Nov. 2, 1909, the fifth child of Robert William Long and Minnie Mae Johnson Long. In 1913, the family moved from Center to Monte Vista, Colo. After her mother passed away, the family moved back to Canon City in 1918. As a young girl, Mabel was a member of the Baptist Church of Canon City. In 1921, the family again moved to Fowler, Colo., where Mabel graduated from Fowler High School in 1927. Mabel married James Earl Hendrex on Feb. 15, 1928 at Pueblo, Colo. After her marriage to Earl, they moved to Boone, Colo. To this union were born three children, Robert S., M. Alliene and Layman E. Earl was killed in a tragic accident on Dec. 26, 1940 at Boone. Through the generosity of Blande Sigler Mabel went to work at Sigler's Grocery Store. She later worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a station agent. Her first assignment was Brandon, Colo. In 1943, she became the first shift operator at Devine, Colo. On Oct. 6, 1944, she then married William Z. Lawrence in Raton, New Mexico. After her marriage to Bill, they moved to North Avondale, Colo. To this union was born their son William V. Bill passed away on Jan. 14, 1953. In 1955, Mabel married Orval E. Cunningham. She was the second shift operator at North Avondale. In Sept. of 1956, the family moved to Scott City, Kan. where Orval became the agent and she retired from the Missouri Pacific. While in Scott City, she operated a ceramic and china painting shop. In 1968, Orval retired from the Missouri Pacific and they moved to Canon City, Colo., where they lived until 1972 when they moved to Weslaco, Tex. In 1980, they moved to Leon Springs, Tex. where they remained until his passing in 1985. Mabel then moved to Pueblo, where she resided on her passing. After her retirement from the Missouri Pacific, she devoted most of her time to her china painting activities. She also enjoyed being with her family, reading, needlework, tatting, crocheting and knitting. Mabel is survived by Robert (Joyce) Hendrex of Greeley, Colo., Alliene (Rudy) Strubel of Pueblo, Layman (Karen) Hendrex of Boerne, Tex. and William (Karen) Lawrence of Craig, Colo. She is survived by nineteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her nephew Richard (Judy) Smith of Pueblo, Alma Rae Peterson of Duluth, Minn., Virginia Kelley of Yucca Valley, Calif., Tommy McQuistion of Wiemer, Tex., and her special caregiver Marilyn Zorko of Pueblo. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings. Services will be held on Mar. 29, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Pueblo Christian Center, 1605 S. Pueblo Blvd., with burial following at Mountain Vale Memory Gardens in South Canon City. You spent long, hard days washing clothes and endless hours cooking and ironing for your family. I remember the stories of you growing up on the farm, and being one of the first women to receive a driver's license in the state of Nebraska. I remember all of the great dinners and how you never used a cookbook. There are so many good memories of you imprinted in our hearts, minds and souls. Your loving memory will allow us to grow in love and friendship and strength through all circumstances that surround our daily lives. W. Elizabeth "Sue” (nee Chasteen) Cunningham - Pueblo Chieftain - January 10, 2001 - Age 65, departed this life Jan. 7, 2001. Preceded in death by her husband, Dale Cunningham; son, Kevin Cunningham; parents Wilma and A. B. Chasteen; and her brother, William B. Chasteen. Survived by her daughters, Dana Chasteen-Cunningham of Pueblo, and Erin Cunningham of Golden, Colorado; aunt and uncle, Gundel and Robert Popp; numerous beloved cousins and other family members. She was loved by all who knew her. Born April 11, 1935, in Pueblo and was a lifetime resident. Sue was a lifelong student attending, McMurray College in Illinois, University of Colorado in Boulder, Pueblo Junior College, as well as University of Southern Colorado. She was a business owner, realtor, real estate investor and tax preparer. Sue spent her retirement as a pet sitter and volunteer for A.A. R. P., S.E.T., and the I.R.S., as well as preparing taxes for low income and senior citizens. There will be no viewing. Cremation, Montgomery & Steward Crematorium. Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, in the Montgomery & Steward Chapel, with Rev. Roger Hupp officiating. Curlee, Randolph Robert
Randolph Robert Curlee - Pueblo Chieftain - December 28, 2003 - Randolph Robert Curlee departed this life on Dec. 24, 2003, at Pueblo Extended Care Nursing Home. Born in Winston-Salem, N.C., in 1920, he was the only son of George Wilson and Anne (Parker) Curlee. His early life was spent in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he attended a local elementary school and graduated from high school. When World War II broke out, he proudly enlisted in the United States armed forces, where he engaged in combat throughout Europe. He rose to the rank of Corporal. After the war, he returned to his hometown of Winston-Salem, N.C., where he worked at a local funeral home, the Hanes Hosiery and Textile Mill and a family-owned business, the Curlee Fancy Hand Laundry. Then he left for Bridgeport, Conn., where he worked briefly in the steel mill. By the early 1950s, Mr. Curlee had settled in Pueblo, Colo., where he spent the next 50 years of his life. While in Pueblo, he worked at the steel mill. Upon retirement from the mill, he enjoyed visiting family and friends. He never missed a family reunion until he became physically unable to travel. At the last family reunion held in New York City in June 2003, the entire contingent of family attendees took turns talking to him in Pueblo on the telephone. This was an enormous treat which he savored. Mr. Curlee treasured getting together with his lodge members, union members and former co-workers from the steel mill. He enjoyed watching television, especially the news and public interest programs. He was also an avid reader. A daughter, Joy Curlee (formerly of Chicago), George and Anne Curlee; and a stepmother, Flossie Curlee, all of North Carolina, predeceased Mr. Curlee. Three marriages ended in divorce. Survivors include two sons, Edward and Everette. Others left to mourn his passing are sisters, Dr. Betty Nyangoni of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Frances Crosby of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Mrs. Patricia Reed of Norfolk, Va.; and a host of other relatives and friends. Randolph will lie in state from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday, at Bethlehem Baptist Church. His Going Home Service will begin at 11 a.m. at the church, the Rev. John W. Richardson officiating. Ritualistic Rites will be by Eureka Lodge No. 2 F&AM (PHA). Military honors by the Pueblo Veterans Ritual Team. Cremation to follow. Family will receive friends at a repast at the Cole Fellowship Hall.

Wilburn Curnutt - Clovis News Journal - April 21, 2004 - Clovis, NM - Wilburn Curnutt - Services: Have been held. Wilburn Curnutt, 84, of Waco, Texas, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at a nursing home in Waco. He was born January 26, 1920, in Trinidad, Colo., to C.F. and Florence Curnutt. He came to the Methodist Children's Home in Waco at the age of 10. He graduated from Waco High School in 1939. He received a football scholarship and attended Weatherford College, then transferred to the University of North Texas on another football scholarship. He played on the team that went to the first bowl game at North Texas, which it won. He received a master's degree in arts in 1947. He married Angelina Meredith on July 13, 1946, in Denton, Texas. He served for a short time in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He worked at the V.A. Hospital in Waco, retiring in 1977. After retirement he became well known for pecan-tree grafting. He had served as a Boy Scout leader and a Little League coach. He was a member of the American Legion Post 440 and the Lakeshore United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife; a son, Randy Curnutt (and wife, Kristine) of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; two daughters, Melinda Dodd (Troy) of Kingwood, Texas, and Nancy Stone (Travis) of Houston; seven grandchildren, Kelly Curnutt of Los Angeles, Kari O'Neill (Billy) and Keegan Curnutt of Seattle, Kyle Curnutt of Bellingham, Wash., Lacy Belote (Jason) of Dallas and Tripp and Tyler Stone, both of Houston; a great-granddaughter, Kevan Curnutt; a sister, Thelma Scales (George) of Clovis; and a brother, Harold Curnutt (Betty) of Blessing, Texas. The Rev. Pamela Dykehouse officiated the services. Burial was at Waco Memorial North in Waco. Lillian E. Currier - Hutchinson News - May 7, 2004 - Hutchinson, KS - Lillian E. Currier, 86, died April 27, 2004, at her home, Hinkley, Calif. She was born Feb. 7, 1918, at Trinidad, Colo., the daughter of Guy and Julia Patterson Rowe. She graduated from Pratt High School, Pratt, in 1936. She was a former resident of the Paruna Community, northeast of Buffalo, Okla. On July 4, 1942, she married Charley Calvin Currier. He died in 1986. Survivors include: a son; a daughter, Julia DeLozier, Argonia; three sisters, including Martha Jantzen and Retta Irons, both of Ashland; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Paruna Baptist Church, northeast of Buffalo. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Myatt Funeral Home, Ashland.

Thelma Ruth Smith Currington - Pueblo Chieftain - March 17, 2006 - Thelma Ruth Smith Currington, 80, departed this life March 12, 2006, at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. Born July 4, 1925, in Pocatello, Idaho, to William and Maude Williams-Smith. Thelma married Alfred Currington on Dec. 24, 1948, in Pocatello, Idaho. She had been a resident of Pueblo since the 1950s. Thelma retired from the Pueblo Army Depot after working there for 32 years. She was a lifetime member of the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where she was Sunday School superintendent, Pearl Smoot Missionary Society, church clerk and Mother of the Church. She had many years of exceptional, uninterrupted and faithful services in many departments. She also was a member of the Colorado Baptist Southern District, Interdenominational Prayer Band, Church Women United and Pueblo Chapter NAACP. Preceded in death by her parents, William and Maude Smith; husband, Alfred Currington; two brothers, Brooklyn and Elmer Smith; three sisters, Willie Mae Braefield, Lena Edwards and Listoria Harris. Thelma leaves to cherish her memory her much loved son, Edward (Shirley) Currington; two grandsons, Raymond Edward and Thomas E. Currington; two great-grandsons, Thomas Deontae and Damasjae De-lon Currington; nieces, Evelyn (Lee) English, Fannie Lee Lowe; nephew, Frederick Brooklyn Smith Sr.; two sisters-in-law, Kathy and Leester Currington; also survived by many other relatives and friends and her church family. Curry, Drake Allen
Drake Allen Curry - Pueblo Chieftain - February 16, 2002 - Born March 14, 1964, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Rita Voncile Curry Scott and the late John Arthur Curry. He accepted Christ at an early age at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Fort Wayne. A 1983 graduate of Southside High School Fort Wayne and a member of the Armed Forces of the United States. After basic training, Drake wed his lovely wife, Paula of 18 years on Nov. 25, 1983, and continued his service in Killeen, Texas, and later in Nurnberg, Germany. After his honorable discharge in July of 1993, Drake received a degree in heating and air conditioning. Employed at Federal Express since 1993. His hobbies included motorcycling, computers, stereos and autos. A loyal member of Friendship Baptist Church, Drake served in whatever capacity he was asked to. The Male Chorus, Children's Ministries and Sunday School were special areas of service. Drake was a devoted Christian, and a dedicated, loving husband and father who kept the Lord, first and foremost, in his family's life. Drake completed his mission for Christ on Valentine's Day, Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002. (God showed his great love for Drake by allowing him to enter into His kingdom.) Gordon N. Curry - Pueblo Chieftain - July 27, 2003 - Gordon N. Curry left to be with the Lord July 25, 2003. A proud Army veteran, he retired as an electrical consultant for ABC Plumbing. He was recognized and admired for his intellectual knowledge in general. He loved the mountains, warm days and a good rain. He loved his family dearly and was always a pillar of strength and guidance for all. Gordon is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin D. Curry and Ilda G. Holloway. He is survived by his loving wife, Rosita Vigil Curry; sister, Velda (Roy) Cameron; sons, Dr. Gilbert Cruz Garbiso and Gordon Ricky Curry; daughters, Geri (Grover) Lewis, Sandie (Raymond) Chavez and Rosita (Jeramie) Trujillo; and 13 grandchildren, Brenda Rae, Jennifer, J.R. (Raymond), Gilbert Jr., Lorenzo, Jacob, Dakota, Markus, Giangelo, Gabriela, Ruben Thomas, Samantha and Heather. He will also be sadly missed by numerous other family and friends. Suzanne M. Curry – Pueblo Chieftain – August 10, 2006 - Suzanne M. Curry, 84, passed away August 7, 2006 in Lakewood, Colo. after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Curry was a long time resident of Pueblo. She was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, John R. "Bob" Curry and brother, Jack White. She is sadly missed by her children Marcia (Jim) Sabo of Littleton; son Paul (Cindy) Curry of Thornton; grandsons Michael and Patrick Sabo of Littleton; granddaughter Hollie Christison of Tennessee; great grandson Gary Christison, Tennessee; sisters Polly Maryanski of New Hampshire, Kay Shanks of Michigan, Patricia Morgan of Massachusetts; brothers Mike White of New Jersey and Richard White of Maine as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Suzanne was born June 26, 1922 in Eastport, Maine to Virginia and Louis White. She moved to Pueblo in 1947 where she resided until 2005. Suzanne was an RN and worked for many years in labor and delivery at Parkview and St. Mary-Corwin Hospitals. She was a proud officer and veteran of the US Army Nurse Corp during WWII. She enjoyed bingo, knitting and crocheting, vacations in Maine with her brothers and sisters, and the company of her family and friends in Colorado. Curtis, F. D.
Francis D. Curtis - Akron Weekly Pioneer Press – April 27, 1900 – By the breaking of a scaffolding ninety-five feet high on the dome of the new “stove” being erected at the steel works at Pueblo, five men were hurled to the earth, one of whom, F. D. Curtis, was instantly killed, and J. W. Stanton, a fellow worker, had both legs broken and his skull crushed and will probably die.  The accident occurred while the men were at work putting the dome of the “stove.”  From the “stove” to the walls of the big stacks angle bars for support are run at frequent intervals twelve feet apart, changing so that there is only six feet in the clear.  The dead man was almost crushed to pulp, having his neck broken, skull crushed and all limbs smashed.  He was a German, living on Carterette street, and leaves a wife and one child.  He was a member of the A. O. U. W., No. 45, Bessemer, and was an assistant boiler maker at the steel works.  The other three men, F. H. Freebury, T. Van Bibber and Morgan Williams, escaped with but a few bruises, Freebury and Williams catching the angle bars after falling about twenty feet.  Van Bibber seized a rope attached to the rigger on top of the dome and saved himself by sliding down the rope.  It is stated that the men working on the “stove” have repeatedly asked that a second scaffold be kept under the one on which they were working, in case of accident.  For some reason this platform was never placed there.  Fort Collins Courier – April 26, 1900 – Four men at work on a new blast furnace at Pueblo from a scaffold eighty feet high, fell to the ground.  The sudden breaking of an iron support caused the scaffold to give way.  Francis E. Curtis was killed by the fall, J. W. Stanton was so badly injured that he cannot get well, and T. V. Freebury and Morgan Williams saved themselves from fatal injuries by catching hold of a rope and an iron bar in their descent, and holding on until rescued.

Rae was a retired psychiatric technician from Colorado State Hospital and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, John C. Curtis; her son, Phillip I. (Judy) Robinson of Fort Collins, Colo.; stepchildren, Jim Curtis and Elizabeth Curtis, both of California; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Sgt. Robert Charles Curtis - Pueblo Chieftain - December 21, 1997 - Sgt. Robert Charles Curtis, 35, passed away Dec. 19, 1997, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Survived by his parents, Robert and Roseann Curtis, sister, Janice (Richard) Jaber, Pueblo, nephew, Ryan Jordan, grandparents, Steffie and Tom West, Pueblo, aunts and uncles, Joseph and Joan Martinelli, Floreen Dawson, Charles and Jean Curtis, Dan Curtis, great-aunt and uncle, Mary and Tony Latino, Stella Daurio, numerous other family members also survive, as well as special friend, Crystal Smith, his law enforcement family and his beloved dog, Zack. Preceded in death by grandparents, Charles and Denise Curtis, and Joseph Martinelli. Mr. Curtis was a member of Holy Family Church. He attended Pueblo schools, graduating from South High in 1980, attended USC and the Southern Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy in Trinidad, Colo. While serving with the Pueblo County Sheriff's Department, he was a dispatcher, patrol sergeant, field training officer and investigator. William Powellson Curtis - Huerfano World - July 14, 1983 - William P. Curtis, 70, Pueblo, formerly of Walsenburg and Gardner, died Sunday, July 10, 1983 at Cheyenne Mountain Nursing Center in Colorado Springs where he had been a patient since April. Born Oct. 30, 1912, in the Gardner area, he attended schools in Gardner and Walsenburg. He served in the Second World War, taught school, had been involved with sheep ranching, operated a saw mill and had worked for the Pueblo Army Depot from which he retired. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Bruce Curtis, whom he married November 23, 1935; two sons, William Bruce (Beverly) Curtis, Colorado Springs, and John Joseph (Carol) Curtis, Palos Verdes, CA; three sisters, Jean (Adolph) Goemmer, La Veta, Ruth (Karl) Gilbert, Montrose, and Clara (Herman) Cash, Thayer, MO; three grandchildren, William Bradley Curtis, Mary Gregory Curtis, and Michelle Ann Curtis, nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted by Walsenburg Lodge, No. 1086 at the Upper-Huerfano-Gardner Cemetery, 1:30 P.M., Wednesday. Mr. Curtis will lie in state at Boies Almont from Tuesday 9:00 A.M. to Wednesday noon. Boies Almont is in charge of the arrangements.

Marian L. Cushing - Pueblo Chieftain - December 05, 1999 - Marian L. Cushing, 70, passed away Dec. 2, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer. Survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Merritt Cushing; children, Stacy Cushing (Dennis Heid) of Pueblo and Douglas (Mary Jo) Cushing of Lakewood; grandchildren, Melissa and Clayton Cushing; sisters, Beatrice (Charles) Cleveland, Dorothy Ekblad, Victoria (Jim) Hush and Lillian Halberg; brother, John (Sally) Ekblad; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her brother, William Ekblad. Born on Aug. 19, 1929, in Lincoln, Neb., Marian received her degree in business from the University of Nebraska. Marian loved skiing, golf, hiking, fishing, playing bridge and spending time with her family at Crested Butte. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Sierra Club, and a former governor's appointee to the Transportation Legislative Review committee. She was an energetic participant in a wide range of civic, community and political organizations. Environmental and open space issues were her special passions. She was employed for many years as sales manager of the Pueblo office for Lamar Outdoor Advertising. A Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 10 University Circle, in Pueblo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marian's name to the Gunnison Ranchlands Conservation Legacy for preservation of Crested Butte open space or to the American Cancer Society. Services were held Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005 at Schooler-Gordon Funeral Director's Bell Avenue Chapel with Rev. Jo Mann of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church officiating. Interment was in Imperial Memorial Gardens in Pueblo, Colo. One of six children; Mrs. Cutts was born January 29, 1918 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. to Major and Lizzie Thomas Banks. She married Will Cutts. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, and two sisters. Survivors include; a son, William Dewayne Cutts of Pueblo, Colo.; a daughter; Dr. Karen Joyce Cutts of Amarillo, a granddaughter, Amanda Louise Cutts of Amarillo, a sister-in-law; Lucille Banks of Mobile, Ala and a nephew; Edward Banks and wife Mary Lee of Woodstock, Ala and numerous great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
