Colbert, Chunk
Chunk Colbert – Trinidad Enterprise – January 9, 1874 – Trinidad was somewhat startled last Thursday morning by the report that Chunk had been shot at Red River. We have no reliable information in regard to his death; but the rumor generally credited, is that Chunk and a man by the name of John Allison had been quarrelling, both had been drinking during the day. At the time of the shooting it appears that both were sitting at the same table playing cards when Allison said something that angered Chunk, who pulled out his six-shooter with the intention of shooting Allison, but in his haste it struck the table and went off. Then raising it again would have shot Allison had he not, with a quick movement struck Chunk's revolver causing the ball to strike the wall. Before Chunk could shoot the third time, Allison shot him through the head, scattering his brains over the table, killing him instantly. For further information regarding this incident, see Page 2 of: Legends of America – http://www.legends of America.com/HC-ClayAllison1.html.
