Armando Cassai - Pueblo Chieftain - September 1983 - Armando Cassai, La Veta (Three Bridges Ranch), Sept. 8, 1983. Brother of Mrs. Clara M. Bauer, Rocky Ford, and Mrs. Desolina (Max) Elley, Walsenburg. Uncle of Mrs. Clarabelle (Homer) Kenner, Wannaska, Minn., Charles E. "Sonny" (Maureen) Bauer, La Veta, and Margaret Anna Gibson. Also survived by several great nieces and nephews. Graveside service 11 a.m. Tuesday, La Veta Cemetery, with the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating.

Cassares, Domenick S.
Domenick S. Cassares - Pueblo Chieftain - October 19, 1997 - Domenick S. Cassares, 83, passed away Oct. 18, 1997. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Cassares- children, Antonia (Del) Cordova, Lupe (Mark) Velasquez, Samuel Cassares, Joseph (Nora Lee) Cassares and Lawrence Cassares. Also survived by grandchildren, Michael, Tina and Carrie, John, Dave, Tom, Regina and Anthony, Chris Larry, Cheri and Debra- 14 great-grandchildren- brothers, Albert and Marvin Cassares- sister, Benita Garcia-and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Predeceased by parents, Antonio and Avelina Cassares- and grandmother, Maria Perea. Mr. Cassares was a steel worker at CF&I and retired in 1975 from the 40-inch mill, after working 33 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, loved the Broncos, like to travel and fish, and was a devoted family man. Vigil service, Monday, 7 p.m. Funeral Mass, Tuesday, 10 a.m. Both services at St. Joseph Church. Interment, Roselawn Cemetery.

Marvin Cassares - Pueblo Chieftain - May 21, 2002 - Marvin Cassares, 81, went to be with the Lord May 18, 2002. Preceded by his father and mother, Tony and Avalina Cassares; brother, Dominick Cassares; and brother-in-law, Martin Garcia. Survived by his sister, Benita Garcia; brother, Albert (Cora) Cassares; sisters-in-law, Mary Cassares and Josie (Nick) Sanchez; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Marvin retired from the city of Pueblo. At his request, no viewing will be held. Rosary, 7 p.m. today. Funeral Mass, 10 a.m. Wednesday, both services at St. Joseph Church. Interment, Imperial Memorial Gardens.

Mary Cassares - Pueblo Chieftain - March 08, 2004 - Mary Cassares, 85, born Nov. 18, 1918, passed away March 6, 2004. Predeceased by husband, Domenick Cassares; sisters, Flora Sanchez and Katherine Light; and two great-grandchildren, Raquel and Elena Velasquez; and son-in-law, Delfin Cordova. Survived by children, Antonia Cordova, Lupe (Mark) Velasquez, Samuel Cassares, Joseph (Nora) Cassares, Lawrence Cassares; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Rose Sandoval and Julia Baca; numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends, Anita Trujillo, Julia and Bridget Smith. Mary was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She will always be remembered for her wonderful cooking and her beautiful and creative needlework. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish and was a very spiritual woman. Viewing, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Rosary and funeral Mass, 10 a.m. Wednesday, St. Joseph Church. Mary Anita Castaneda - Pueblo Chieftain - May 01, 2001 - Mary Anita Castaneda, 52, of Pueblo, passed away April 30, 2001. Born Feb. 3, 1949, in Fort Garland, Colo. Preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Sarah Martinez. Survived by her sons, Gilberto (Tahnee) Castaneda, Denver, Anthony (Misty) Castaneda, Pueblo; brothers, Dale Martinez and Freddie Martinez, both of Pueblo; sister, Vivian Martinez, Denver; grandchildren, Corey James Castaneda, Cyndlena Castaneda, Gilberto (Little G) Castaneda, Phoenix Blaze Castaneda. Mary Anita loved to dance, fish, camp and also spending summers with her grandchildren. Viewing, 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Vigil rosary, 7 p.m. Thursday, both at Romero Chapel. Castillo, Cornelio
Cornelio Castillo - Colorado Springs Gazette - December 05, 1998 - Cornelio Castillo, 89, died Dec. 3, 1998, at a local care center. He served in the Army during World War II, retired from the Oakland (California) Tribune, then became a professional Latin musician. Mr. Castillo was born May 16, 1909, in Walsenburg. He is survived by a son, Arthur Leroy; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd., 634-1597. Interment will be private.

Castillo, Della
Della Castillo - Huerfano World - July 13, 1989 - Delia Castillo, 92, of Plant City, FL, died Wednesday, July 6, 1989, in her nursing home residence. Mrs. Castillo had been ill the past four years. Born in Talpa (Farisita) Oct. 10, 1896, she was reared on a ranch and farm in the Farisita area. She married Moises Castillo Aug. 1, 1919 and they lived in the same area until moving into Walsenburg in the early 1960's. Mrs. Castillo lived in Walsenburg until about four years ago when she moved to Florida with her daughter, Marie Conley. Mrs. Conley died in 1988 and Mrs. Castillo then lived with her grandson and family Phillip and Margaret Medulla in Riverview, FL until she entered the nursing home. Mrs. Castillo, a member of St. Mary Church, is survived by a son, Arthur Castillo, Odessa, TX; four daughters, Helen Medulla, Tampa, FL, Bernice Gore, Walsenburg, Mary Jane Valdez, Pueblo and JoAnn Chapman, Poway, CA; three sisters, Annie Velard, Denver, Sr. Mary Gertrude Garcia, SM, Tucson, AZ and Andrea Langosh, Pueblo; three half-sisters, two half-brothers, 15 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday from St. Mary Church. Burial was in Gardner Catholic Cemetery. Boies Almont was in charge of arrangements.

Dolores Castillo - Pueblo Chieftain - April 17, 2005 - Dolores Castillo, 58, of Pueblo, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2005. She is predeceased by her father, Nash Martinez; stepfather-in-law, Charles Cardenas; brother, Edward Martinez; and grandson, Francisco Vigil Jr. Dolores is survived by her loving husband, Margarito A. Castillo Sr.; children, Gidget (Alan) Pence, Bridget (Dave) Carrillo, Margarito A. Castillo, Jr., Ronnie (Elizabeth) Castillo, Pauline and Airabella Castillo, and Wendy Castillo; mother, Florence Trujillo; father in-law, Margarito A. Castillo; mother in-law, Sophie E. Cardenas; sisters, Frances Mares, Dorothy Castillo and Betty Martinez; brother, Rudolph Martinez; grandchildren, Aleiya, Airabella, Alan Jr., Maelah, Annaleehsa, Isabelle and Aneisha; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and relatives. She will always be remembered by her loving family as the greatest wife, mother and grandmother anyone would ever have. Dolores will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. John Floyd “Johnny” Castillo Sr. - Pueblo Chieftain - October 26, 2002 - John Floyd “Johnny” Castillo Sr., 64, of Pueblo passed away on Oct. 22, 2002, in Pueblo. Born July 3, 1938, in Hoehne, Colo., John was the son of the late Eloy Castillo Sr.; and his mother, Lita Castillo, still resides in Pueblo. Preceded in death by his wife, Debbie; father, Eloy; brothers, Danny, Ted and Darrell Castillo; brother, Garrick Smith; and twin infant daughters, Veronica and Teresa Castillo. In 1956, Johnny followed his father to Needles, Calif., where he resided for 45 years. He and his father opened and operated the first diesel and auto mechanic shop in Needles, Calif., serving the tri-state community. Survived by his fiancée, Paula Pollack, California; former wife, Nola Gonzales, Arizona; children, Janice (Pete) Torres, Christina Castillo-Alvarado, John Floyd Jr. (Shannon) Castillo, John Floyd III (Monica) Castillo, Burton Nicholas Jr., all of Mohave Valley, Ariz., Dawn and Raphie Castillo, Pueblo; brothers and sisters, Eloy (Erlinda) Castillo, Theresa (the late Pete) Sena, James (Mary) Castillo, of Pueblo, Bernice (Robert) Norman, Virginia, Carlos (Beatrice) Castillo, California, Richard (Juanita) Castillo, Nevada, Karen (Natalio) Cabanillas, Craig (Kathy) Castillo, Corrine (Vicente) Alvarado, Dolan and Garrett Williams, all of Needles, Calif., and Mohave Valley, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Liz Castillo, Trinidad and Susie Arrison, Arizona; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives. Lita Castillo - Pueblo Chieftain - October 24, 2004 - Lita Castillo, 91, departed this life Oct. 20, 2004, at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. Born March 29, 1913, in Hoehne, Colo. Lita was especially schooled for the culinary arts for a special program of Head Start in Dallas, Texas. She was also a restaurateur and had business in both Albuquerque and Alamogordo, N.M. Preceded in death by her parents, Pedro and Juanita (Mestas) Abeyta; husband, Eloy Alfredo Castillo; sons, Dan, Ted and John Castillo; also four brothers and a sister. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Bernice (Bob) Norman, Theresa Sena, Eloy (Linda) Castillo, Carlos (Beatrice) Castillo, James (Mary) Castillo; three sisters, Nancy (Larry) Ortivez, Flora (Bob) Rodgers, Beatrice Madrid; two brothers, Pete (Irene) Abeyta, Paul (Judy) Abeyta; several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Castleman, Kelly
Kelly Castleman - Pueblo Chieftain - February 08, 2005 - Kelly Castleman was born in Browns Station, Mo., on Aug. 14, 1924, and passed away Feb. 3, 2005. He was the youngest of seven boys and also had four sisters. Still living are Elgan, Dallas, Curt, Lynnie Lee, Hazel and Sue. Kelly is survived by wife, Edythe; children, Gary, Barbara and Shari; grandchildren, Sean, Trina, Michelle and Justin; and eight great-grandchildren. As a retired electrical field superintendent, he enjoyed fishing, golf, bowling and vegetable gardening. Funeral service, 11 a.m. Thursday, at Imperial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment, Imperial Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory through the funeral home. The family would like to extend a special thank you for the kind and compassionate care provided by the nursing staff at Life Care Center.

Casto, William E.
William E. "Bill" Casto - Pueblo Chieftain - January 05, 2003 - William E. "Bill" Casto, former Pueblo resident Bill Casto passed away Jan. 2, 2003, at the age of 71 years and one day, at his home in Santa Fe, N.M. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Deborah (Dobbins) Casto; daughters, Charlotte and Karen of Albuquerque, N.M.; son, William of Golden, Colo.; and their families, including seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Velma (Radley) Casto; and sisters, Norma (Mrs. Bill Traeder) and "Seal" (Mrs. George Williams) his extended family includes cousins, Jane (Radley) Proffitt and Richard Radley; brothers-in-law, Bill Traeder, George Williams, Ken Smith, John Darrough, Don Hall and their families. Born and raised in Pueblo, he was an outstanding student and athlete. After graduation from Centennial High School in 1949 he worked in the family's Federal Bakery before attending the University of New Mexico. After graduating from UNM he served in the United States Army and then became a CPA. He left a successful accounting practice to become a private investor. Mr. Casto was involved in a myriad of investment and development enterprises throughout the United States during his lifetime. In recent years he had concentrated on natural and methane gas properties and production. At his request there will be no service. Burial will be in the National Cemetery at Santa Fe, N.M., with only his immediate family in attendance at some future date.

Castro, Adelaida
Adelaida Castro - World Independent – May 26, 1944 - Adelaida Castro, 75, a resident of Gardner for the past seven years, died at her home there this morning. She is survived by four sons, Joe E. and Juan Castro of Farisita; Pedro C. Castro of Yellowstone, Wyo.; and Perfino Castro of Gardner; by three daughters, Mrs. Esequiel Martinez of Tioga, Mrs. Tobias Barela and Mrs. Albert Cordova of Gardner; also by two brothers, Soloman Padilla of Redwing and Max Padilla of Gardner. Her husband, the late Manual A. Castro, died in 1942. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Furphy Brothers mortuary.

Castro, Amarante L.
Amarante L. Castro - World Independent – July 18, 1949 - Gardner Man Killed In Auto Wreck Here Sunday - U.S. Highway 160 – west of Walsenburg – claimed another traffic fatality early Sunday morning, state highway patrolmen reported, with a passenger of the auto in “critical” condition in Lamme hospital. The traffic death was fourth on the roadway this year. Patrolman Harold Popich said 24-year old Amarante L. Castro, a Gardner resident who was employed at the Pueblo steel works, was killed instantly about 2:13 o'clock Sunday morning. County coroner Gus Crump said death was attributed to multiple skull fractures. Examination of the body was held late Sunday morning by Dr. W.S. Chapman. A brother of the dead man, Fernie A. Castro, 16 years old, is in “critical” condition at Lamme hospital, suffering a neck fracture and general body lacerations and contusions, reports Dr. James M. Lamme Jr. attending physician. Patrolman Popich told the World Independent that the accident occurred on La Veta Pass about 25 miles west of the city, when the machine driven by Amarante Castro failed to negotiate a curve and overturned. He said apparently the auto, which was headed toward Walsenburg, was traveling at a high rate of speed. Farthing ambulance brought both men into the city. Amarante Castro was born in Gardner Nov. 7, 1924. He spent four years in the Army infantry during World War II, seeing combat service in Italy. He had spent most of his lifetime in Huerfano County. He is survived by his wife, Ernestine of Pueblo; one son, Joe Ray of Pueblo; four brothers, Lee of Oakland, Calif., Eugene of Pueblo, and George and Fernie of the family residence in Gardner; five sisters, Mrs. Mary Santistevan of Yellowstone Creek, Colo., Mrs. Bertha Trujillo, Pueblo, and Misses Cora, Jane, and Martha Castro, all of Gardner, and by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pedro C. Castro of Gardner. Furphy Mortuary said no arrangements for funeral or burial services have been made.

Mrs. Andrea Castro - World Independent – February 5, 1932 - Mrs. Andrea Castro, aged 88 years, died at the home of her son, John Castro in this city, at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, February 4. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 6 and interment will be in the Yellowstone cemetery under the direction of Furphy Brothers.

Memorial Mass, 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at St. Francis Church, 611 Logan Ave. Family will greet friends and relatives at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Castro, 1430 Stone.

Augustina "Louise" Castro - Pueblo Chieftain - June 04, 1999 - Augustina "Louise" Castro, 85, passed away June 1, 1999. Survived by sons, Roger (Ida) Castro, and Larry (Maryann) Castro- and daughter, Nancy (William) Najar- son-in-law, Tom Montez- 14 grandchildren- and numerous great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband, Jose Castro- daughters, Lizzie, Dorothy, Linda- son, Gregory- sisters, Mary Aragon, Andrea Garcia, Margaret Ortiz- and brother, Ralph Armijo. Louise loved flowers and cooking, and was a meticulous housekeeper. She also loved family gatherings. Rosary, Friday, 7 p.m., Imperial Funeral Home Chapel. Castro, Bernice
Mrs. Bernice Castro - World Independent – December 9, 1946 - Mrs. Bernice Castro, 77, a resident of Huerfano County for the past 36 years, died at her home at 103 Champa Street, Loma Park, early Friday evening. She was born in Taos, N.M. March 6, 1869. Survivors include eight sons, Epifanio Castro of San Pablo; Silverio of Mazanola; Filiberto of Walsenburg; Fidel of Colorado Springs; Jose E., Raymond, and Ernest of Walsenburg, and Tobias of Denver. Also six daughters, Mrs. Placido Armentas of Avondale; Mrs. Mary Martinez of Walsenburg; Mrs. Anastacia Castro of Loma Park; Mrs. Mike Gonzales of Fowler; Mrs. Otillia Duran of Trinidad, and Mrs. Bennie LaFever of Denver. She is also survived by 90 grandchildren and by 45 great grandchildren. Rosary services will be held this evening at 7:30 at the Furphy chapel here and funeral services will be Tuesday morning at 9:30 at the mortuary chapel and at 10 o'clock at the St. Mary church. Interment will be in the Valdez cemetery, under the direction of Furphy's.

Castro, Celestina
Celestine Castro - Walsenburg World – August 20, 1910 - Young Woman Is Taken - The death angel invaded the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thom. Castro on Wednesday, August 17, 1910, and took from them their beloved daughter, Celestine. She was in her eighteenth year and leaves many young friends, besides her relatives, to mourn her death. The funeral services were held at St. Mary's church, Thursday afternoon and were attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The ladies if the Altar Society, all dressed in white, and carrying wreaths of flowers, acted as pallbearers. The hearts of many were touched by the impressive services. Measles followed by a complication of diseases was the cause of the young lady's death. Celestina Castro - Walsenburg World – August 25, 1910 - Died at Walsenburg, Colo., on Friday August 16, Celestina Castro, age 20 years, 11 days.

Mrs. Celina Castro - World Independent – September 10, 1956 - Mrs. Castro Dies In Denver After Brief Illness - Mrs. Celina Castro, wife of Feliberto Castro and a lifetime resident of Walsenburg, died September 8, in a Denver hospital, where she had been for the past two months. Mrs. Castro was born April 11, 1911 at Walsenburg and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Noverto Armijo, of Walsenburg. She was a member of St. Mary Church and the Mother's Club. She is survived by her husband, Feliberto; by six daughters, Mrs. Irene Carroll, Upland, Calif.; Mrs. Nash Bobian, Denver; Josephine, Betty Lou, Frances, Barbara, and Patricia Alberta; by one son, Feliberto Jr., all of Walsenburg; by four brothers, Lazaro and Joseph Armijo of Walsenburg; and Charles and Mike of Pueblo; by three sisters, Mrs. Rose Romero, Mrs. Pedia Chavez and Mrs. Rebecca Chavez, all of Walsenburg and by one grandchild. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Furphy Mortuary.

Claudio Castro - World Independent – August 13, 1954 - Claudio Castro Dies Suddenly On Pueblo Trip - A trip to see a daughter ended in death for a Walsenburg man. Claudio Castro went to Pueblo yesterday to visit his daughter Mrs. Rosanna Martinez. He died suddenly Thursday evening of a heart attack. In addition to Mrs. Martinez, survivors include two other daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Vigil, Stockton, Calif., and Mrs. Mary Cortez, Henderson, Nev.; three sons, John Castro, Pueblo, Jose and Gabriel Castro, Denver; two brothers, Santiago Castro, Walsenburg and John Castro, Stockton, and 25 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Castro, Cora
Cora Castro - World Independent – December 19, 1934 - 12 Year Old Gardner Girl Buried Today - Twelve year old Cora Castro, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Catedra Castro, died at her home in Gardner yesterday and was buried in the Gardner cemetery this afternoon. Cora was one of eight children in the family. There were four boys and four girls. She is survived by her mother and father and by her four brothers and three sisters. Interment was under the direction of the Unfug-Peet Mortuary after services at the Sacred Heart Church, with Father Belloni officiating.

Castro, Cordelia
Cordelia Castro - World Independent - January 3, 1931 - Influenza Among Infants Causes Death at Gardner - Influenza and pneumonia have been aiding the grim reaper among the infants in the Gardner and Redwing communities. Dr. W.S. Chapman was called there Wednesday morning to investigate several deaths in families where no physician had been called. He found that Joe Arenio Marquis, 1 year old, and Salome Marquis, 2 years old, children of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Marquis, had died from the ravages of the flu and pneumonia. In the family of Mr. and Mrs. Pedro Castro, the 20 months old baby, Cordelia Castro, had succumbed to the disease; and Maria Montez, a 5 months old, was another victim. Cordelia Castro died on Monday, January 5, and funeral services were held at Gardner Wednesday under direction of Furphy Brothers. Other burials were conducted by the families of the dead infants.

Ernest L. Castro - Huerfano World - March 5, 1998 - Accident claims 3 (with pictures) - Three Walsenburg residents were pronounced dead at the scene of a one vehicle accident on Highway 10, 30 miles east of the city in Pueblo County. They were going to a funeral in Crowley County. Identified at the scene were the driver, Ernest L. Castro, 43, his mother, Della Vallejos, 77 and Renee A. Ortibez, 33. According to the state patrol report by Sgt. Paul Matzke, it appears that Castro fell asleep and his 1995 Chevrolet Tahoe ran off the right side of the road. The vehicle traveled 282 feet before correcting back onto the highway and then ran across the roadway and off the left side. It rolled two and half times, coming to rest on its top. Mr. Castro and Ms. Ortibez were ejected while the vehicle was rolling. Obituaries on all three appear on Page 2. Huerfano World – March 5, 1998 – Ernest Larry 'Ernie' Castro, 43, of Walsenburg, died with his mother, Della Vallejos in a one car mishap on Feb. 28, 1998. Born Aug. 10, 1954 in Walsenburg, he is survived by his son, Emest R. Castro, Walsenburg; a daughter Kati Ann Castro, Walsenburg; a brother, Gabriel Herman Castro, Englewood; a sister, Roseann Groves, Arvada; his step-father, Larry Vallejos, Walsenburg and the mother of his children, Jane Castro, Walsenburg, numerous nieces and nephews. Ernesto Castro - Walsenburg World – September 23, 1957 - Ernesto Castro Dies Suddenly In Salida Hospital -Ernesto Castro died in a Salida hospital suddenly late Friday. Mr. Castro was employed by the D&RG railroad. He was injured about a year ago, although the injury did not seem serious at the time, he was unable to recover and a few days ago he was removed to the hospital. Mr. Castro was born at Aguilar, March 15, 1908, the son of the late Desiderio and Bernice Castro. Mr. Castro married Miss Della Duran on September 29, 1940, at Walsenburg. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. In addition to his wife he is survived by one daughter, Rose Ann, and two sons, Herman Gabriel and Ernest Jr. all of the family home; seven brothers, Epifanio of San Pablo, Silverio of Toltec, Fidel of Colorado Springs, Toby of Denver, Filiberto, Eleive and Ray of Walsenburg; three sisters, Mrs. Sophie Armenta and Mrs. Cora Gonzales of Pueblo, and Mrs. Stella La Fevre, of Denver. Recitation of the Rosary will take place Wednesday at St. Mary's Church at 7:15 p.m. Another Rosary will follow at the Furphy chapel. The funeral will leave the mortuary Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Requiem High Mass at St. Mary's Church at 9 a.m. followed by interment in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Mrs. Eva Castro - World Independent – September 5, 1952 - Mrs. Eva Castro Dies Thursday In Pueblo Hospital - Rosary services for Mrs. Eva Castro, Walsenburg resident who died in a Pueblo hospital, will be held at the Furphy chapel Saturday and Sunday nights at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Castro died yesterday after an extended illness during which her family was constantly at her bedside. Born in 1897, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Felipe J. Jaques, pioneer family of this county. She lived her entire lifetime in Huerfano County. She is survived by her husband, Jose E. Castro of this city and a daughter, Mrs. George Medina of Eaton, as well as two grandchildren. Requiem High Mass will be held at the Sacred Heart church in Gardner Monday at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the Gardner Catholic cemetery.

Fernie Castro - World Independent – July 21, 1949 - Second Castro Youth Dies From Wreck Injuries - A one-car accident on U.S. Highway 160, twenty-five miles west of Walsenburg, last Sunday morning has claimed its second victim. The two fatalities were brothers, who resided in Gardner, according to the state highway patrol. Sixteen-year-old Fernie Castro died at 2 o'clock this morning at the local hospital of injuries received in the accident. The first victim of the wreck was Amarante L. Castro, 25, also of Gardner, who was employed at the Pueblo steel works. Amarante Castro was killed instantly. The younger brother suffered a serious fractured neck and general body contusions and lacerations, reports Dr. James M. Lamme Jr., attending physician. The accident occurred at 2:15 Sunday morning when the car driven by Amarante Castro failed to negotiate a curve and overturned. Harold Popish, state highway patrolman who investigated the accident, said that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred. The death today brings the total to five occurring on U.S. 160 so far this year. Fernie Castro was born Nov. 7, 1932 in Gardner living in this section his entire lifetime. He was employed at a broom factory in Pueblo prior to the accident. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pedro C. Castro of Gardner; three brothers, Lee of Oakland, Calif., Eugene of Pueblo, and George of Gardner; five sisters, Mrs. Mary Santistevan of Yellowstone Creek, Colo., Mrs. Bertha Trujillo of Pueblo, and Cora, Martha and Jane of Gardner. Rosary services will be tomorrow evening at 7:30 in Furphy chapel. The body will lie in state at the chapel from noon Friday until 8:30 a.m. Saturday, at which time the body will be taken to the Gardner Catholic church. Funeral services will be held at the Gardner Catholic church at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be made in the Gardner Catholic Cemetery. All services are under the direction of Furphy mortuary.

He had worked for the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind before his retirement. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shrine of Remembrance "America the Beautiful" Chapel of Roses, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd. Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 S. Hancock Ave. Mr. Castro was born May 7, 1905, in Trinidad to Desiderious and Bernice Castro. He was married Jan. 26, 1946, in Colorado Springs to May A. Gurule, who survives. He also is survived by four sons, Michael F. of Columbus, Miss., Valentino H. of Colorado Springs, Glen G. of Wichita, Kan., and Richard L. of Parker; two daughters, Judith L. Jones of Alamogordo, N.M., and Abelina R. Ramirez of Littleton; a sister, Estella LaFevere of Lakewood; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Castro was preceded in death by his parents, 17 brothers and seven sisters. Mr. Castro had been a resident of the area since 1935, and had previously lived in Trinidad and Walsenburg. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Parish and the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf. He was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed bowling and gardening. She was the beloved mother of Henrietta (Barry) Butler of Aguilar; beloved grandmother of Jeune Ortiz of San Diego; beloved sister of Albert (Marian) Ortiz of Pueblo, Velma Ortiz of Trinidad, Dorothy Valle of Pueblo, Ernestine Ortiz of Pueblo and John Ortiz of Denver; beloved aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. James S. Castro - World Independent – January 24, 1957 - James S. Castro, Former JP Here, Dies In Pueblo - James S. Castro, 78, former Justice of the Peace, passed away in a Pueblo hospital Wednesday afternoon after a very short illness. Mr. Castro was born in Huerfano County July 15, 1878, and spent his entire lifetime in this County. As a young man he worked in the coal mines, and later became engaged in farming. In 1946 he was elected Justice of the Peace and served two terms in this capacity. He retired in 1950. He was a member of the St. Mary church and also a member of the Club Coronado. Mr. Castro is survived by one son, Charles of Pueblo, and two daughters, Mrs. Jake Vigil of Pueblo and Mrs. Fritz Martinez of Walsenburg. Other survivors are eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Recitation of the Rosary will take place at 7:15 Friday evening at the St. Mary Church, and 7:45 at the Burress Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be at 8:30 Saturday morning at the Burress Memorial Chapel, and Requiem High Mass will be celebrated at the St. Mary Church at 9:00 o'clock. Jesus Castro - World Independent – February 21, 1955 - Fall Is Fatal To J. Castro - Jesus Castro, 53, Walsenburg mechanic, died Sunday of injuries received Saturday night when he slipped and fell. The fall occurred in the 200 block West Seventh. Death was attributed by a doctor to a skull fracture. At the time, he was not thought seriously injured and was taken to his home by relatives who were with him when he fell. He died at his home after he was examined by a physician who recommended that he be taken to a hospital. Jose "Roger" C. Castro - Pueblo Chieftain - May 06, 2004 - Jose "Roger" C. Castro, age 70, passed away in close comfort with his family on May 4, 2004, at his home in Pueblo, Colo. He was born March 18, 1934, in Rouse, Colo., to Jose and Augustina Castro. The Castro family moved to Pueblo, Colo., in 1949. In 1952, he married Ida Marie Baros where they raised a wonderful family of seven. Roger worked for over 37 years at the CF&I, retiring in 1992. Additionally, he owned and operated the Circle Lounge Tavern where he established long-standing relationships which were considered family and friends alike. In addition to working two jobs, Roger along with his wife, Ida, enjoyed spending time with their family and friends. His hobbies included extensive travel and antique car collecting. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Augustina Castro; brothers and sisters, Lizzy Castro, Julian Castro, Dorothy Medina, Nancy Najar, Gregory Castro and Linda Montez. Survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Ida M. Castro, 67, of Toltec, who passed away in a Pueblo hospital last Friday. Burial was in the Cuchara Cemetery. Mrs. Castro, a member of St. Mary church, was born in Elkins, N.M. on December 12, 1894, and came to Huerfano county at an early age. Born June 14, 1894, at Turkey Creek, he attended school at Farisita. On, Nov. 11, 1916, he married Rose Martinez and they made their home in Gardner. His life work was farming and sheep shearing. Mr. Castro, a member of Sacred Heart Church, is survived by his wife, Rose, Gardner; seven children, Gene Castro, Olympia, WA, Mary Santistevan and Martha Valdez, Pueblo, Bertha Trujillo, Gardner, Cora Whitney, George Castro and Jane Wahl, all of Colorado Springs; a brother, Con Castro, Peyton; a sister, Lucy Cordova, Pueblo; 25 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Raymond Castro - Huerfano World – August 17, 1961 - Raymond Castro, Local Policeman, Dies From Stroke. Raymond Castro, a member of the Walsenburg Police Department since 1955, died in St. Mary-Corwin Hospital in Pueblo on Sunday. He was 52. Patrolman Castro was operated on at the hospital on July 13 and was recovering to such an extent that he was able to return home on July 24. However, he reentered the hospital on July 27 after a light stroke from which he never regained consciousness. Born in Trinidad on March 25, 1909, he had lived in Walsenburg since moving here with his parents when he was three years old. He attended local schools. Married in Walsenburg on November 29, 1937, Patrolman Castro was a member of St. Mary Church and the National Police Officers Association. In addition to his wife, Ernestine, the deceased is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Abel Trujillo and Miss Carol Castro, both of Walsenburg, and Mrs. Petro Trujillo, Oakland, Calif.; two sons, Donald and Jackie, both of the family home; six brothers, Selebero and Filverto Castro, both of Walsenburg, Fidel and Elivio Castro, both of Colorado Springs, Epifanio Castro, San Luis, and Toby Castro, Denver; two sisters, Mrs. Estella LeFevero, Denver, and Mrs. Maclovia Gonzales, Pueblo; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Mary Church. Burial was in the new St. Mary Cemetery. Members of the Walsenburg Police Department were honorary pallbearers. The local unit of the Colorado State Patrol attended in a body. Arrangements were in charge of the Furphy Mortuary.

Born in the Yellowstone area Jan. 3, 1900, she grew up and was educated in country schools. She married Pedro Castro Nov. 11, 1916. They lived in the Gardner area where Mr. Castro farmed and sheared sheep. Santanna is survived by her children, Odelia Trujillo, Anthony (Eufemia) Castro, Bernice (Richard Meade) Mondragon, Patricia (Art) Gallegos; 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; brother, Tony (Bertha) Trujillo; and sister, Vicky Trujillo; also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Santanna was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and participated in the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Viewing will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m.; both to be held at Adrian Comer Garden Chapel. Funeral Mass, 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Thomas Castro - Pueblo Chieftain - October 11, 1998 - Thomas Castro, 52, passed away Oct. 9, 1998, at Parkview Hospital following a brief illness. A lifetime Puebloan, Mr. Castro was born April 6, 1946. He worked as a rubbish hauler. His hobbies were video taping, repairing small appliances and yard work. Preceded in death by his parents, Denicio and Christina Castro- brother, Soloman Castro- brothers-in-law, Neives Fuentes and Nash Aguero. Survived by his wife, Dorothy Ann Valdez Castro- son, Sammy Martinez- three sisters, Mary Aguero, Vedia Fuentes, Monica (Brehon Herlihy) Castro- a brother, Joe Castro- three nieces to include his favorite niece who took care of him, Debbie Fuentes, also Gina Flores and Diane Rios- five grandchildren also survive. A member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, where both services will be held. Rosary vigil, 7 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral Mass, 10 a.m. Wednesday, Rev. John Waters, S.J. celebrant. Cremation to follow. Visitation, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday, Angelus Chapel. Family will receive friends at the home.

Pauline L. Castrone - Boulder Daily Camera - March 1, 2006 - Boulder , CO - Pauline L. Castrone - Sept. 19, 1924 — Feb. 24, 2006 - Pauline L. Castrone, of Thornton, formerly of Boulder, died of a long illness following a stroke Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, in Broomfield. She was 81. The daughter of Santo Benincasa and Asunta Torchio Benincasa, she was born Sept. 19, 1924, in Trinidad. She married St. George Charles Castrone on Nov. 5, 1950, in Kingston, N.Y. Mrs. Castrone lived in Boulder from 1965 to 1992. A graduate of Kingston High School, she was a wife and mother. "She was known for her lavish holiday meals," her family said. Survivors include her husband, of Thornton; one son, Jim Castrone, of Westminster; two daughters, Linda Luttrell, of Westminster, and Patricia Tinney, of Thornton; two brothers, Peter Benincasa, of Kingston, and Salvatore Benincasa, of Utica, N.Y.; three sisters, Ermalinda Giannuzzi, of Kingston, Marie Erena, of Lexington, Ky., and Yolanda Walden, of Georgetown, Texas; and six granddaughters. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Armand Benincasa, Michael Benincasa and Albert Benincasa. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 900 W. Midway Blvd., Broomfield. A funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the church. Father John McCormick will officiate. All Veterans Burial and Cremation Services in Wheat Ridge is handling arrangements.

Antonio H. Castruita - Pueblo Chieftain - May 21, 2005 - Antonio H. Castruita, 91, passed away May 18, 2005. He was preceded in death by his son, Tomas H. Castruita. He is survived by his wife, Clara P. Castruita; children, Josephina (Roberto) Mena, Juanita (Jose) Acevedo, Octavio Castruita, Susana (Jose) Ramirez, Roman Castruita, Antonio (Margaret) Castruita; Ramiro Castruita; 23 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass, 10 a.m. today, St. Leander Parish. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery.
