Betlack, Jesse
Jesse Betlack - Pueblo Chieftain - November 10, 2006 - Bicyclist in fatal crash identified - Authorities have released the name of a bicyclist killed when he was struck by a car Wednesday north of town. State Patrol Cpl. Mike Hargrove said 63-year-old Jesse Betlack of La Junta died from injuries suffered when his bicycle was struck from behind by a vehicle on Colorado 109 about four miles north of town. According to a patrol report, the accident happened at about 5:30 a.m. near La Junta's Industrial Park. Betlack was traveling north in the right lane when he was struck by a car driven by Michael Maestas, 29, of Rocky Ford. Betlack was thrown into the air and was struck by the windshield of Maestas' vehicle before falling to the roadway. Betlack was pronounced dead at the scene by Otero County Coroner Bob Fowler. He was not wearing a helmet. Maestas was treated at the scene for minor injuries and was wearing a seat belt, the patrol reported. Hargrove said it took a while to find Betlack's next of kin because they live out of state. "We got a hold of his son who lives in Virginia - he (Betlack) was kind of a loner type so it was hard to find much information about him," Hargrove said.
