Patricia Ellen Atkins - Pueblo Chieftain - February 12, 2004 - Patricia Ellen Atkins, 66, of Rye, passed away Feb. 11, 2004. Survived by her husband, Ralph W. Atkins; daughter, Amy (Danny) Chenault; and mother, Geneva Hastings; both of Terre Haute, Ind.; grandchildren, Zachary Atkins and Justin Chenault; brother, Doug (Olga) Hastings of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Preceded in death by her father, Ivan Hastings; and sister, Janet Watson. Patricia was born Dec. 7, 1937, in Terre Haute, Ind., and was a longtime member of the Academy Christian Church in Colorado Springs. As per her request, there will be no viewing or service. Cremation, Montgomery & Steward Crematorium. Those who desire may make memorials to Rye Volunteer Fire Department. Tribune-Star - February 16, 2004 - Patricia Ellen Atkins, 66, of Rye, Colo., formerly of Terre Haute died Wednesday Feb. 11, 2004. She was born Dec. 7, 1937, in Terre Haute to Ivan Hastings and Geneva Hastings. Survivors include her husband, Ralph W. Atkins; one daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Danny Chenault of Terre Haute; her mother of Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Zachary Atkins and Justin Chenault; one brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Olga Hastings of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father and one sister, Janet Watson. She was a longtime member of Academy Christian Church in Colorado Springs. As per her request, there will be no viewing or services. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to Maplewood Christian Church. Atlas, David
David Atlas - Pueblo Chieftain - October 04, 1998 - David Atlas, 92, of Pueblo passed away Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998. David was a Pueblo resident since 1950, a Holocaust survivor, active member of United Hebrew Center and a very devoted husband and father. Predeceased by wife of 60 years, Sally Atlas. He is survived by two daughters, Frieda (Scott) Hall of Cohasset, Minn., and Helena (Michael) Atlas-Acuna of Pueblo- and two granddaughters, Adele Hall and Sara Atlas-Acuna. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at Adrian Comer Garden Chapel. Interment at B'nai Jacob Cemetery.

Sally Atlas - Pueblo Chieftain -January 08, 1998 - Sally Atlas, 92, a Pueblo resident of 58 years, passed away Jan. 6, 1998. Sally was one of the survivors of the holocaust during WWII. She was active in Hadassah, United Hebrew Center, Allied Jewish Council, Eagles Auxiliary, and the B'nai B'rith Women. She is remembered as a devoted wife and mother by her husband, David Atlas- children Frieda (Scott) Hall, Helena (Michael) Atlas-Acuna- and grandchildren, Adele Hall and Sara Atlas-Acuna. Funeral service to be held 2 p.m. today at the Adrian Comer Garden Chapel. Interment, B'nai Jacob Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Hebrew Center, 106 W. 15th Street, Pueblo, Colo.

Atler, Joe C. Jr.
Joe C. Atler Jr. - Daily Times-Call - July 9, 2004 - Joe C. Atler Jr. of Longmont died Sunday, July 4, 2004, at Hospice Care of Boulder and Broomfield Counties in Louisville. He was 65. He was born May 2, 1939, in Costilla, N.M., to Joe C. Sr. and Pauline (Martinez) Atler. He grew up in Costilla, moving to Avondale at age 12. Mr. Atler worked as a farm worker and was involved with growing crops, irrigating fields and raising cattle. He also worked at a plant in Laramie, Wyo., that made railroad ties. He managed a lumberyard in Frederick and did construction work. For the last 15 years, Mr. Atler was disabled. He enjoyed fishing, playing bingo and taking drives, just for the ride. He will be remembered for his devotion to his children and grandchildren and for how he enjoyed spending time with them. He is survived by a son, Joe C. Atler III of Denver; three daughters, Dolores Atler of Denver, Mary Ann Valdez and her husband Rudy of Pueblo and Cindy Starr and her husband Ernest of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; three brothers, Robert Lira and his wife Etna of Denver, Charlie Lira and his wife Martha of Pueblo and Tony Martinez and his wife Audrey of Longmont; five sisters, Theresa Martinez and her husband Johnny, Mary Gonzales and her husband Tony, Alice Garcia, Gloria Dunn and Beatrice Martinez, all of Longmont; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Atler was preceded in death by a niece, Josie Padilla; and a nephew, Junior Martinez. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Howe Mortuary. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Deacon Bob Howard officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 8, also at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Mickey Flaska presiding. Cremation arrangements will take place after the services at Howe Mortuary, Longmont.

Atteberry-Ames, Sarah M.
Sarah M. Atteberry-Ames - Pueblo Chieftain - May 27, 1999 - Sarah M. Atteberry-Ames passed away May 21, 1999, in Pueblo. Sarah was born in Tahlequah, Okla., on Jan. 13, 1936, and had lived in Pueblo since her teenage years. She was employed as a registered nurse at Parkview Hospital and the State Hospital for many years and was a professor of nursing and psychology at USC. She also served on the board of Spanish Peaks Mental Health. Sarah was proud of her Cherokee Indian heritage and enjoyed volunteering as a greeter at the State Fair and traveling the world. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Mary Cain- and a brother, O.D. Edwards. Sarah is survived by her husband, Lonnie Ames- children, Jeanette (Peter) Coleman, Eugene (Billea) Ames, David (Beatrice) Atteberry, Darryl Atteberry, Doug Atteberry, all of Pueblo, Eric (Shawndra) Ames of Thornton- her grandchildren, Jeremy Campbell, Jeanine Atteberry, Darryl Jones, David and Tiffany Atteberry, Chesley, Alyssa, Matthew, Aaron, Chance Ames and Desmond- her great-grandson, Dominic Gallegos- her parents-in-law, Bertha Ames-Ackerman and Delon Ackerman of Minnesota- numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins including, Shirley Edwards, Sharon Troyer, both of Pueblo and Butch Edwards of California. Cremation in the Davis Crematory. A will be held on Friday, May 28, 1999, at 2 p.m. in the Broadway Christian Church, 206Broadway, with Rev. Hal Hartman officiating. The family will greet friends in the church reception hall following the service.

Arna E. Atwater - Pueblo Chieftain - March 24, 2002 - Arna E. Atwater, 48, joined her sisters, Edna Bittman and Roberta Mendicello, in heaven on Saturday, March 23, 2002. Arna was born in Pueblo on Sept. 22, 1953. She was a longtime employee of Minnequa Works Credit Union. She is survived by her parents, Arnold and Emma Bittman of Pueblo; her husband, Larry Atwater; and daughter, Amanda of Pueblo West; sisters, June (Hugh) Byerly of Pueblo West, and Norma (Bob) Yagnich of Golden, Colo.; father- and mother-in-law, Walt and Wanda Atwater of Pueblo; sister-in-law, Robin (Karl) Birch of Pueblo; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will he held in Arna's honor on Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Central Christian Church. The time of the service will follow later. In lieu of food and flowers, the family requests that contributions may be made to Sangre de Cristo Hospice in Arna's memory.

Aubert, LaVerle D.
LaVerle D. Aubert - Pueblo Chieftain - September 10, 2005 - LaVerle D. Aubert passed away Sept. 7, 2005, in Pueblo. LaVerle was born May 10, 1920, in Plainview, Neb., to Henry and Grayce Shearer Ketelsen. LaVerle had lived in Arizona, South Dakota and California before settling in Pueblo in 1998. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in South Dakota and the First United Methodist Church. LaVerle was preceded in death by her first husband, Delbert Norris, in 1941 and her second, Wilfred Aubert, in 2000. She is survived by her children, Marilyn (Merlin) Lillie of Oklahoma, Allen (Diane) Aubert of Pueblo, Wayne (Kathleen) Aubert of Denver; a brother, Lonald Ketelsen of Nevada; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 10, 2005, at the First United Methodist Church, 310 W. 11th St. Cremation will follow. Inurnment will take place at a later date at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Plainview, Neb.

Aubert, Wilfred E.
Wilfred E. Aubert - Pueblo Chieftain - April 05, 2000 - Wilfred E. Aubert passed away April 2, 2000, after a short illness. He was born March 20, 1917, in Neligh, Neb., and had lived in Arizona, South Dakota and California before moving to Pueblo two years ago. He was employed in management for Moor Man Mfg. Company for 19 years before his retirement in 1974. Wilfred is survived by his wife of 56 years, LaVerle Aubert; his daughter, Marilyn (Merlin) Lillie; sons, Wayne (Kathleen) Aubert and Allen (Diane) Aubert; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mr. Aubert will lie in state from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. today at the mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2000, in the First United Methodist Church, 310 W. 11th. Cremation will follow in the Davis Crematory. Interment will follow at a later date in Plainview, Neb. The family asks that memorials be directed to the United Methodist Building Fund or to the Heart Fund. Donations may be made through the mortuary.

Louis J. August - Pueblo Chieftain - December 16, 2004 - Louis J. August, 79, born Nov. 17, 1925, passed away Dec. 12, 2004. Preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Idamae; parents, Louie and Elizabeth August; and sister, Betty Hemphill. Survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Linda August-Ones and Kurt Ones, and Lori and Wayne Pechek; grandchildren, Chad and Cole Ones, and Ty, Taneisha and Tony Pechek. Also survived by loving sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Bob Christenson and Violet and Fred Melton; in-laws, Helen Lutes, Bill and Barbara Krasovec, Elsie Jacobs, and Katherine and Leo Beller; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, May Rose Chubrillo, Carl and Rose Amato and Don and Louisa Warren and numerous other friends. Louis was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He retired from the C&W Railroad after 43 years of service and was a member of Pueblo Aerie No. 145 FOE. Mrs. August worked at the Colorado State Hospital. She was a member of First Congregational Church while in Pueblo. Preceded in death by her husband in 1971; an infant daughter; a great-grandson, Brandon Jensen; daughter-in-law, Agnes August; and two brothers, Steve and John Beres. Survived by sons, Gus S. (Roberta) of Albany, Ore., John W. of Worland, Wyo., Fred D. (Genia) of Oak Harbor, Wash; daughter, Ruthlee (Jim) Sterk of Colorado City sister, Elizabeth August of Pueblo; 14 grandchildren- 28 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Evelyn Aust - Pueblo Chieftain - August 13, 2001 - Age 87, passed away Aug. 11, 2001. Born May 2, 1914 in Lufkin, Texas, and was a Pueblo resident since 1946. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles J. Aust who was a general contractor in Pueblo. Survived by sister-in-law, Beatrice Brennan of Lufkin, Texas; three nephews, Mike Brennan, Tampa, Fla., James (Skipper) Brennan, Lufkin, Texas, and J.P. Dodgen, Llano, Texas. Aubrey C. Austin - Pueblo Chieftain - September 09, 1998 - Warren-Bohlender Funeral Chapel Fort Collins, Colo. Aubrey C. Austin passed away Sept. 7, 1998, in Fort Collins, Colo. Aubrey, the son of Ralph and Anna Austin, was born in Albion, Neb., on Jan. 11, 1911. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Vera. They were married in Garden City, Kan., on Nov. 30, 1933. In 1937, they moved to Pueblo, where they resided until 1992. Aubrey was a manager at Safeway until his retirement in 1968. He was a member of the Elks Club, where he enjoyed playing pool and was a former member of Sertoma International. In the 1950s he won several trophies at the skeet and trap range and also enjoyed fly fishing. He is survived by a daughter, Phyllis (Harry) Ferguson of Fort Collins- son, Richard (Donna) Austin of Sierra Vista, Ariz.- grandchildren, Harry R. Ferguson, Mike Ferguson, Tina Ferguson, Randy Austin and Jeanne Austin- sisters, Pauline, Georgie and Evelyn- brother, Jack- as well as eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A will be held at Parkwood Estates, 2201 S. Lemay Ave., at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998. Private interment will be in Pueblo, Colo. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dunn Elementary School where he had worked with the kindergarten children as a volunteer in care of Warren-Bohlender Funeral Chapel.

Delpha Austin - Pueblo Chieftain - September 22, 1997 - Delpha Austin, born on June 24, 1922, died Sept. 20, 1997. Delpha was one of 12 children born in Boise, Idaho, to Joseph and Nettie Raty. She spent most of her life in the Oakland, Calif., area before coming to Colorado in the 1970s. Survived by her five daughters, Paula Maroney, Pamela McCaffery, Camille Whitten, Janet Cook, Toni Austin- and her 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her happy smile, loving deeds and her dedication to her children. , 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rye LDS Church. Interment, Brookside Cemetery in Rye. Austin, Elsie Lorene
Elsie Lorene Austin - Pueblo Chieftain - July 08, 1998 - Elsie Lorene Austin passed away July 6, 1998, in Pueblo. Elsie was born in Wichita, Kan., on Feb. 23, 1921, to Arthur and Harriett Muller Scaman, and had lived in Pueblo most of her life. She retired from the business office of Parkview Episcopal Hospital after many years of service and was a member of the Park Hill Baptist Church in Pueblo. Mrs. Austin was preceded in death by a grandson, Dale Stein, earlier this year and is survived by her children, Van Scott (Cindi) Austin of Craig, Janice (George) Stein, Melanie (Ed) Perko, both of Pueblo, Marlene O'Leary of Westminster- a sister, Lucille (Richard) Serena of Pueblo- as well as nine grandchildren- three great-grandchildren- a niece and nephew. Cremation in the Davis Crematory. A will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 1998, in the Park Hill Baptist Church, 1302 E. Fifth Street, with Rev. Lonnie James officiating. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Austin may be made to the Jolly Seniors or the Single Care Ladies through the Park Hill Baptist Church.

Austin, Kitty
Kitty Austin – Pueblo Colorado Weekly Chieftain – April 18, 1872 – Death in a Magnio (?) – Was it Natural, Accidental, or Designed?  The Affair Involved in Mystery.  On Thursday last Dr. Thombs was summoned to attend one of the frail inmates of that classic institution known as the Stranger's Home, who was reported to have been attacked with fits, and in a dying condition.  On making an appearance, the doctor found his patient a girl of considerable personal attractions, responding to the name of Kitty Austin, in a comatose state, and apparently beyond all medical aid.  He prescribed such remedies as the case seemed to demand, and then left, but the girl sank rapidly, and died in a den of infamy, and surrounded by her companions in guilt, at a late hour in the afternoon.  The girl is dead and buried; there is no question about that fact; but whether she died from natural causes, or committed suicide, or was poisoned, either through her own act, or the connivance of others, is open to discussion, and involved in a romantic degree of mystery.  It is well known that the girl was in her usual health, and in good spirits on the day previous, and many have been led to suppose that she committed suicide over the receipt of a letter on Thursday morning, which contained bad news from home.  One report has it that she died from an overdose of morphine, another of hysterical fits (whoever heard of a woman dying of hysterics), and still another that her death was produced by an overdose of morphine administered by her own hand.  It strikes us very forcibly that the case was a fit subject for the coroner, even if the female was a common prostitute, and we believe that the proper authorities, whose duty it is to attend to such matters, were criminally negligent in allowing the interment to take place without an examination.  As the case now stands, it might have been a natural death, a suicide, or a murder, but no one is any the wiser.  In cheering contrast to the apathy displayed by other parties, is the noble conduct of the Rev. Mr. Hamilton.  In response to an invitation which informed him of the sudden death, he repaired to the house and proceeded to administer the last sad rites incident to christian burial.  Standing over the body of the despised Magdalen, and surrounded by men and women who live in an atmosphere of pollution and vice, he pointed out to them the consequences of sin, the uncertainties of life, and the glories of the resurrection.  As he spoke, and pictured to his hearers the beauties of a life spent in charity, virtue and holiness, and implored them to be warned by the career of the poor creature so suddenly called to her last account, many eyes in the hardened throng were suffused in tears, and sobs, groans and ejaculations of remorse were audible throughout the room.  It was a touching scene.  There lay the dead girl in her shroud, surrounded by her companions in guilt, in the very apartment which had often resounded with their midnight orgies, and which seemed a very pandemonium on earth, until death put in an appearance and claimed one of its revellers.  Now, all was hushed, sad and solemn, save by the tones of the minister, who breathed forth the message of the persecuted Son of God, “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.”  At the conclusion of Mr. Hamilton's remarks, one of the most notorious girls in the institution lifted her right hand and swore a solemn oath that hereafter she would lead a pure and virtuous life, and her resolve, we understand, will be pursued by several others.  In conclusion, we hope that if these fallen ones are sincere in their intentions, our citizens will assist them to reform, and not through coldness and neglect compel them to again place their feet on the ladder the steps of which lead down to hell.

Luther E. Austin - Pueblo Chieftain - May 17, 1974 - Luther E. Austin, 117 W. 24th, passed away at a local hospital, Thursday, May 16, 1974. Proceeded in death by his parents, Mary Saracino and Tony Saracino and his son David G. Austin. Survived by his loving wife of 50 years Sadie A. Austin; children, Philip E. Austin II, Valerie A. Billings (Esco), Eric L. Austin (David Whybrew); grandchildren, Shelby Austin (Brenda), Gus Austin, Christa Riggle (Mark), Jeremiah Rojas (Leslie), Kenneth Brantley, Kyle Billings, Ross Billings; great-grandchildren, Taylor Sandoval-Riggle, Casey Austin, Jeremy Rojas, Tyce Riggle; sister-in-law Earlene Spicola (Russell), brother-in-laws John Rummel and Bill Rummel; numerous nieces and nephews; Betty Steves and family. Phil served in the Marines during the Korean War in which he received several honors including the Purple Heart. He returned home to raise his family in Pueblo, where he retired from the CF&I. A private memorial was held by the immediate family. Ralph Noble Austin - Pueblo Chieftain - October 06, 2002 - Ralph Noble Austin, age 77, passed away Oct 3, 2002, in Westcliffe, Colo. He was born Aug. 25, 1925, in Hillside, Colo., a son of the late Noble and Florence Koch Austin. Ralph married Uldine King on Feb. 8, 2002, in Raton, N.M. She resides in Westcliffe. He is also survived by two children Beverly (Vincent) Mizer of Fowler, Colo., and Stanley (Peggy) Austin of Lakin, Kan.; five stepchildren, Steve (Ann) Galusha of Colorado Springs, Colo., John (Dee-Dee) Galusha, Pueblo West, Colo., Linda Galusha of Pueblo, Colo., Bonnie (Russ) Stiefel of Seattle, Wash., and Tina (Charles) Grando of Fort Lupton, Colo.; three grandchildren, Heath (Allison) Mizer, Heather (Mike) Sarnowski and Travis Austin; one great-grandchild, Morrison Sarnowski; and one brother, Ben (Fran) Austin of Westcliffe. He is preceded in death by two sisters Ellen and Ada Mae. Ralph was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Silver Cliff Lodge No. 38 in Westcliffe and the Southern Colorado Consistory, he was a member of Al Kaly Shrine. He served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Land Bank for 10 years, was appointed by President Ford to the Farm Credit Board where he served for six years and also served as a Custer County Commissioner for 12 years. Visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at the Holt Family Funeral Home in Canon City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Westcliffe, Colo., with Rev. Michael Percival, officiating. Glynn T. Auten - Pueblo Chieftain - April 30, 2002 - Age 74, born Jan. 17, 1928, passed away April 28, 2002. Survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Lois I. Auten. Father of Donna (Boyd) Rodman, Pueblo, Christine (Allen) Robertson, Pueblo West, Mary Auten, Northglenn, Gibson T. Auten, Garden City, Kan., and Guy T. Auten and Peggy L. Auten, both of Denver. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Jean (Paul) Parker, Pueblo West; two half sisters, Marilyn (John) Allsup and Shirley (Morris) Hale; half brother, Melvin (Carol) Auten, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his father, Ray Auten; mother, Ruth Mott; stepfather, Harold Mott; and half brother, Lou Mott. Carmen Autobee - Pueblo Chieftain - July 16, 1998 - Carmen Autobee, 59, of Pueblo, formerly of Avondale, passed away July 13, 1998. Carmen retired from the PAD after 32 years of service. She was an avid bingo fan, loved to crochet and really loved spending time with her grandson, Jesse. She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, George, who passed away April 30, 1997- and sister, Mary Lobato. She is survived by her daughter, Judy Autobee- and son, Ted Autobee- grandson, Jesse Autobee- and sister, Anne Cordova. Memorial Mass, 1 p.m. today, Sacred Heart Church, Avondale. Cremation will follow per the family's request. Family will receive friends at the church hall following the service where coffee and donuts will be served.

Autobee, Charles
Charles Autobee - Rocky Mountain News - December 9, 1988 - Funeral services will be Saturday, December 10, for Charles Autobee, great-great-grandson of Colorado pioneers Charles and Serafina Autobees, who died this week after a lengthy illness. He was 63. Burial will be in the old St. Vrain Cemetery where his famous namesake and other relatives are buried. (The "s" was dropped from the Autobees' name several generations ago.) Until his death Tuesday in Avondale, Autobee was the caretaker of the historic cemetery 10 miles southeast of Pueblo. Autobee was born July 19, 1925, in Avondale, on the family farm where he spent most of his early years farming and ranching, said his son, Robert Autobee. During World War II, Autobee served in the Army and earned a Purple Heart. He was a prisoner of war in Germany. After returning to the pueblo area, Autobee worked as a forklift operator at the pueblo Army Depot until his retirement in 1975. He was preceded in death by his wife, Francis "Pancha" Autobee. They had four sons and a daughter. The original Charles Autobees left his native St. Louis when he was about 24. He settled at the site of the Taos Trail crossing at the San Carlos River, seven Miles south of pueblo after securing part of the Nolan Grant, a Mexican land grant. On February 20, 1853, Autobees moved to the confluence of the Huerfano and Arkansas rivers, near present-day Boone. He was joined by Richard Wooten and Joseph B. Doyle in building their adobe placitas in what became known as Autobees Settlement. There are an estimated 2,500 direct descendants of Autobees living in Colorado. The oldest living relative is great-grandson, Mariano Autobee, 96, of Avondale.

Eric Aaron Autobee - Pueblo Chieftain - October 22, 2002 - Eric Aaron Autobee, 23, departed this life Oct. 18, 2002, in the line of duty, while working at the Limon Correctional Facility. A lifetime Pueblo resident, he was born Aug. 19, 1979. He graduated from Pueblo County High School in 1998, and Pueblo Community College in 2000. He was the recipient of School District 70 MINDS scholarship in 1998. Eric loved big game hunting, turkey hunting and fishing. He was a big Denver Broncos Fan (especially Terrell Davis). He enjoyed billiard pool, and the Colorado Avalanche Hockey Team. He was the proud owner of “Red,” his 1964 Chevy Impala Supersport. He was an altar server and usher for St. Joseph Catholic Church. He loved everything about life and all that Jesus Christ gave him personally. Preceded in death by his grandparents, Charlie and Frances Autobee; uncles, Charles “Chuck” Autobee, John Romero; cousin, Anthony “Scott” Ortiz. He leaves to cherish his memory, loving parents, Bob and Lola (Ortiz) Autobee; grandparents, Benito M. and Grace I. Joseph Gilbert Autobee - May 21, 1999 - Joseph Gilbert Autobee, 74, of Charleston, Mass., died Feb. 23. The brother of the late Maria Torres (Mrs. Jose Emilio Torres) of Pueblo. Mr. Autobee, a Naval World War II veteran, had been retired for 10 years. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters and a grandson, all of Massachusetts, and two sisters, Ida Martinez of Greeley, Colo., and Nora Escobedo of Butte, Mont. A service will be held at St. Leander Parish at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 22.

Survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Aurora; children, Dr. Thomas Autobee (Betty), Jeanette Garcia (Patrick), Sharon Urrutia (Rennie); grandchildren, Mike Autobee (Shannon), Andrea Autobee, Michelle Lisac (Brad), Desiree Autobee, Kristina, Alicia, Joseph and Stefan Garcia, Anthony and Stephanie Urrutia, Melissa Roehr; and great-grandson, Zane Howard; sisters, Theresa Mayfield and Tillie (Robert) Ortega; and a large wonderful extended family and many, many friends. Mr. Autobee was a descendant of the Autobee pioneer family and a co-founder of the Autobee Club. He was a WWII veteran with the 448th Air Force Bomber Group. He was a member of St. Leander Catholic Church, the Eagles F.O.E. No. 145, the Latino Club and the Pueblo County Historical Society. He had a love for baseball, fishing, gambling and enjoying the family cabin and being outdoors. Autobee, Mariano
Mariano Autobee - Rocky Mountain News - January 24, 1990 - Mariano Autobee, the great-grandson and oldest surviving relative of Colorado pioneer settler Charley Autobees, died Sunday in the Belmont Lodge Nursing Home in Pueblo. He was 97. Mr. Autobee was born June 18, 1892, near Cisneros Creek in Huerfano County. He farmed in the Kersey and Avondale areas and later went to work at the Pueblo Ordnance Depot. He retired in 1951. His famous relative, Charley Autobees (the family dropped the "s" from their name at the turn of the century), was a St. Louis orphan who came west at about age 11, when he joined a party of trappers on the Missouri River in the early 1820s. After trapping and trading throughout the West for a number of years, Autobees set out from New Mexico in the winter of 1853 with 60 pack animals and 25 men. He founded a settlement at the confluence of the Arkansas and Huerfano rivers, about 20 miles east of present-day Pueblo. Despite frequent raids by Indians, the settlement survived and Autobees' colony was soon providing food and shelter for prospectors headed to the Pikes Peak gold fields. The settlement continued to grow and Autobees remained there until his death in 1882. Today, hundreds of Autobees' descendants live in Pueblo County. "My grandfather wasn't an educated man, but he was well-known and well-liked," said George Autobee, grandson of Mariano. "He told many marvelous stories about the early days. He was quite a man." Mr. Autobee was a member of the Autobee Club and the Association de Nuestro Padre Jesus. He also was a lay leader in Los Hermanos Pentitente, a religious sect that has been practicing its ceremonies in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico for hundreds of years. Survivors include five daughters, Emilia Rael, Cora Cassares, Delma Pando, Vera Cruz, all of Pueblo, and Stella Pando of Gardner; two sons, Milton Autobee and Faris Autobee of pueblo; 36 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and 53 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, and numerous children. Funeral Mass will be at 7 p.m., tomorrow, and a vigil service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, in Sacred Heart Church in Avondale. Burial will be in the family cemetery in St. Vrain. Huerfano World - January 25, 1990 - Mariano Autobee, 97, died Jan. 21, 1990, in Belmont Lodge, Pueblo. Autobees, Charles
Charles Autobees - Dolores News - Rico, Ouray County, Colorado - July 1, 1882 - One of Colorado's Old Timers Gone - Charles Autobees, one of the oldest and best-known frontiersman in Colorado, died at his home, on the Huerfano, near Fort Reynolds, twenty miles east of Pueblo, on the 17th of June at the advanced age of 80 years. Autobees is a man with a remarkable history. He was born and raised in St. Louis, MO, which at that time, however, was a small village or trading post. He was of French extraction and was a man of commanding presence and fine physique. He came to Colorado in 1843 with a company of trappers under the command of Kit Carson, since which time this state has been his home. He stood over six feet high in his stocking feet, and for years he was associated with Kit Carson, William Bent, Jim Baker and other noted frontiersmen in Colorado's early history. He took an active part in all Indian wars after his arrival in the new west, and his strong arms and undaunted bravery helped to put down many an outbreak of hostile outrages, and all learned to fear his prowess. He took an active part in the Taos rebellion in 1845, and it was owing in a great measure to his skill and bravery that the insurrection was put down. He was for many years in the service of the Government as Chief of Scouts during the Indian troubles on the plains, and was at one time quite well off. When the Indian outbreak occurred in 1868, he raised a company of one hundred volunteers, marched to headquarters and offered the services of himself and company, which were eagerly accepted, and he was placed in command, and his son, Mariano, was installed as first lieutenant. He performed noble and dangerous work on that campaign and was many times wounded. He was intimately acquainted with Colonel William Bent, and assisted in building Bent's old fort near where Fort Lyon now stands. His life's history would form an interesting chapter in Colorado recollections, and it is to be regretted they have not been preserved.

Autobees, Charles Mrs.
Mrs. Charles Autobees – Pueblo Colorado Weekly Chieftain – November 23, 1871 – Our many readers will be pained to learn of the death of Mrs. Charles Autobees, who expired at her residence on the Lower Huerfano, twenty-two miles from Pueblo, on Tuesday, the 21st inst.  The deceased has been a resident of what is now Pueblo county for thirty years, where she formed many acquaintances who respected her for her goodness of heart and many social qualities.  She had been troubled with a dropsical complaint for some time past, finally resulting in death.  She was buried on Wednesday, the 22d inst.  A husband and a large family of grown up sons and daughters are left to mourn her loss.  Note: Based on the 1870 census, her first name is believed to be Sarafilina.
