Julian Atencio Pueblo Colorado Weekly Chieftain August 3, 1876 He is Lodged in Pueblo County Jail Julian Atencio, the man shot by Miguel Archuleta one day last week at Walsenburg, died on Saturday last of his wounds. The authorities of Huerfano County, fearing that Archuleta would be taken from the jail and lynched by the friends of the murdered man, removed the prisoner from Walsenburg to this city on Sunday. The friends of Atencio were very turbulent and it was only through the exertions of Silverio Suaso, Esq., aided by other prominent citizens of the neighborhood, that the prisoner was not hanged. Mr. Suaso, though a friend of the murdered man, stood up manfully for law and order and he is worthy of the greatest praise. When the prisoner was removed from the jail to the train, the friends of Atencio were out in full force and well armed, but the presence of a strong guard prevented any stronger demonstration than the heaping of much abuse upon the head of the murderer. Archuleta, we understand, claims that Atencio had threatened his (Archuleta's) life and that a conspiracy had been formed to murder him (Archuleta). Archuleta is now in the county jail here and seems much depressed.
