Arraj, Lois
Lois Eleanor Arraj - Pueblo Chieftain - June 05, 2002 - Lois Eleanor Arraj passed away May 31, 2002, in Pueblo. She was born Dec. 24, 1905, in Alva, Okla., the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Davis. Mrs. Arraj graduated from Trinidad High School in 1924 and worked in Trinidad until moving to Pueblo with her husband in 1937. She and her husband owned and operated the D&S Paint Center in Pueblo. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Pueblo and active in Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert J. Arraj; two brothers, Arthur Davis and William E. Davis; two sisters, Enid Loftus and Sibyl Davis. She is survived by one sister, Ethel M. Kimbley of Aurora, Colo.; brother-in-law, John Loftus, Pueblo; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2002, in the Davis Memorial Chapel with interment to follow in the Masonic Cemetery in Trinidad. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church, 405 W. Ninth, Pueblo, CO 81003.

Arriaga, Doreen A.
Doreen A. Curnutt Arriaga - Pueblo Chieftain - August 31, 2005 - Doreen A. Curnutt Arriaga, 46, passed away Aug. 23, 2005. Survived by her husband, John F. "Catfish" Arriaga; three children, three grandchildren, her parents and siblings. Doreen will be missed sadly by her family and friends. Private family service has taken place.

Arriaga, Lillie H.
Lillie H. Arriaga - Pueblo Chieftain - October 24, 2001 - Lillie H. Arriaga, 85, passed away Oct. 22, 2001. She is predeceased by husbands, Vidal Adame in 1940 and Esequiel D. Arriaga in 1967; sister, Mary (Chona) Gonzales; and children, Rachael Hieman, Kelly Arriaga and Nellie Sanchez. She is survived by her children, Alex (Joleen) Adame, Josie (Ben) Mendoza, Larry (Windy) Arriaga, Mary Esther (Richard) Vigil and Zeke (Elizabeth) Arriaga; numerous nieces and nephews; 33 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Lillie was a volunteer for Senior Citizens SET Program, a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Mount Carmel Society, The Blessed Sacraments, Legion of Mary and served as Eucharistic Minister and President of the Guadalupanas Organization. She was also on the first Fiesta Day Committee and The Damas Unidas (Women's Benefit and Betterment Club). Visitation, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday. Rosary, 7 p.m. Thursday. Arriaga, Paula Maxine
Paula Maxine Arriaga - Pueblo Chieftain - June 11, 2006 - Paula Maxine Arriaga departed this life June 7, 2006. Born on Sept. 23, 1982, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Nana Rose Marie "Dimples" Arriaga and Max and Millie DeHerrera. Survived by her parents, Paul and Shirley Arriaga; brothers, Carlos (Alicia) and Ramon (Kristen) Arriaga, and the "loves-of-her-life," her nieces, Isabella and Kai. Also survived by her grandfather, Paul Arriaga; aunts and uncles, Debbie (Bob) Gonzales of Lakewood, Michelle DeHerrera, Chris Chapman, Corrine "DeDe" Arriaga (Tino Herrera), and Rick (Kathy) Arriaga; and numerous cousins, Nicole, Joe, Marco, Mario, Michelle, Renee, Courtney, Doug, Eric and Alex. She will be sadly missed by many wonderful friends and her Broadway Pharmacy, Jorge's, and Elmwood Golf Course co-workers. Paula was nearing completion of her teaching degree at CSU-Pueblo. She was a beautiful, vibrant, caring person with a strong faith in God. She always lived life to the fullest. Service, 11 a.m. Monday, St. Patrick Church. In lieu of flowers and food, a donation may be made to Central High School Foundation Scholarship Fund in memory of Paula. Family and friends will be received at 105 Montcalm.

Arridy, Joe
Joe Arridy – Colorado Public Defender - (August 13, 1937) and Joe Arridy (a.k.a. Arrdy) (January 6, 1939). Joe Arridy, Pueblo. (H-W and Other-W). Asphyxiation. Aguilar and Arridy were convicted of the August 16, 1936, murder of Dorothy Drain. The men were accused of breaking into the Drain home, sexually assaulting Dorothy, and then killing her and seriously wounding her younger sister with a hatchet. In 1925, Arridy, who was born in Pueblo shortly after his parents immigrated from Syria, had been adjudicated as mentally incompetent and sent to “[t]he State Home and Training School for Mental Defectives” in Grand Junction. At the institution, his IQ was measured at forty-six. He was released after a nine-month stay, but three years later returned to the institution. In 1936, he walked away from the Home and was not seen until his arrest in Wyoming sixteen days later—ten days after the murder. There he offered the first of many confessions to the crime, with each confession changing a bit to conform with newly discovered facts. Arridy's arrest surprised officials in Pueblo, who had already arrested Aguilar, a Mexican national, for the murder and discovered the murder weapon in Aguilar's home. The Wyoming authorities then secured a confession from Arridy in which he said that he had acted alone in the murder. A jury trial first was conducted to determine if he was sane, where three psychiatrists testified that Arridy had the mind of a five or six-year-old child. Law enforcement officials, however, claimed that he was sane, and that position prevailed, even without the support of any mental health experts. Arridy was then convicted of murder in a separate jury proceeding, in which the defense attorney again focused on proving that Arridy was insane rather than challenging the “evidence.” The conviction was affirmed on appeal, and further attempts to show that Arridy was mentally incompetent for execution failed, each time by four-to-three votes in the Colorado Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Aguilar was executed in 1937. During the execution, one of the official witnesses, Adlai S. “Ad” Hamilton, a Pueblo resident and conductor for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, had a heart attack and died. During his eighteen months on death row, Arridy became close friends with the warden, Roy Best. The warden, who spoke out against the pending execution, bought him toys, picture books, and for Christmas in 1938, a wind-up toy train that quickly became Arridy's favorite toy. Arridy's appellate attorney was Colorado's future attorney general, (Mr.) Gail Ireland. Later, the case formed the basis for a seminal book-length case study written by Robert Perske. Among other things, the book explains how the desire to please through false confessions, coupled with ineffective assistance of counsel and an environment in which there was little concern for understanding the mentally retarded, may very well have cost an innocent person his life.

Arrieta, Joseph T.
Joseph T. "Pumpkin" Arrieta - Pueblo Chieftain - February 01, 2004 - Joseph T. "Pumpkin" Arrieta, 72, departed this life Jan. 30, 2004. He retired from CF&I Steel Corp., wire mill department with 29 years of service. Preceded in death by his parents, Fernando and Tomasita (Hernandez) Arrieta; brother, Porfio Arrieta; father- and mother-in-law, Benjamin and Daisy Baros. Mr. Arrieta was born Feb. 18, 1931, in Las Animas. Survived by his beloved wife, Josephine Arrieta; children, Robert (Maria) Arrieta, Porfi (Cindy) Arrieta, Albert (Yolanda) Arrieta, Daisy (Phil) Hernandez; six sisters, one brother, 13 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. Visitation, noon until 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Angelus Chapel. Vigil service, 7 p.m. Tuesday, and funeral Mass, 10 a.m. Wednesday; both services, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Rev. Ron Roche, celebrant. Interment, Roselawn Cemetery.

Arrieta, Tomasita
Tomasita Arrieta - Pueblo Chieftain - September 23, 1999 - Tomasita Arrieta, 86, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, formerly of Pueblo, died at her daughter, Christina Smith's home on Sept. 12, 1999. Predeceased by husband, Fernando Arrieta. Survived by children, Joseph (Josephine) Arrieta, daughters, Esther (Robert) Vigil, both of Pueblo, Dorothy (Frank) Solis, Colorado Springs, Anita (Sedillo) Aljandre, Virginia (Fernando) Mejia, Gloria Mestas, Christina (Bernie) Smith and George (Janet) Arrieta, all of Denver; three sisters; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Memorial Mass, 10 a.m. Saturday, St. Francis Xavier Church, Pueblo. Inurnment, Manzanola Cemetery.

Arrigo, Carmen Albert
Carmen Albert Arrigo - Pueblo Chieftain - December 14, 2003 - Carmen Albert Arrigo, 79, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 11, 2003. Born April 23, 1924, to the union of Joseph and Josephine Arrigo. Predeceased by his parents, two brothers and four sisters. Carmen leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 55 years, Vivian; daughter, Mary Alice (Jack) Sather; grandchildren, Mike “Rocky,” Brian and Tony Pachak; brother, Joseph (Orchid) Arrigo; sisters, Frances Jones, Josephine (Carl) Brown; sisters-in-law, Mary and Becky Arrigo, Kathryn Dunkel, Josephine Pomeleo; brother-in-law, Anthony (Frances) Ingo; as well as numerous other relatives and friends, along with his special dog “Tami." Carmen owned and operated both Carmen Arrigo Auto Service and was president of Arrigo Mining and Milling Corp. He joined the U.S. Navy when he was 16 years old and served for 6 years actively. Carmen was first and foremost a loyal family man who cherished his grandsons. He was a no-nonsense man with a feisty spirit, witty comments and the biggest heart. He will be greatly missed. Visitation, from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, followed by vigil service at 7 p.m. at T.G. McCarthy Funeral Home. Arrigo, Mary L.
Mary L. Arrigo - Pueblo Chieftain - July 20, 2004 - Mary L. Arrigo quietly passed away on July 17, 2004, two weeks before her 92nd birthday. She has re-joined her husband of 66 years, Mike; and their babies, Joseph and Josephine; parents, Jim Laino and Mary Costanza (Rosilino Costanza); sister, Connie; and brothers, Rocky, Mikie and Dominic. Left behind are daughter, Mari Ann Roe; dearly loved granddaughters, Athena Roe and Kim Ferguson; and great-grandson, Robert Ferguson; sister, Lou Fritz; aunt, Mary Masterantonio; sisters-in-law, Vivian (Carmen) Arrigo, Frances Jones, Josephine (Carl) Brown and Becky (Vince) Arrigo; brother-in-law, Joseph (Orchid) Arrigo; several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. Arrigo was a living example of a lifelong helpmate and homemaker for her husband and family. She delighted everyone with delicious dinners and Italian cookies, especially during the holidays. Mary was versatile, resourceful and an expert at sewing, knitting, crocheting and all forms of crafts. Her greatest pleasure was planting and watching her garden grow. Mike also kept Mary busy as he worked on cars at the Mike Arrigo Auto Service. She was his bookkeeper, and "Right-hand Gal." Although constantly busy, Mary always found time for a cup of coffee and cookies with everyone who came to visit. She was a longtime member of St. Francis Xavier and Holy Family churches and the Mother Cabrini Lodge. A very special thanks is extended to sister-in-law, Vivian, whose thoughtfulness and frequent visits made the days brighter; the staff at Sharmar Village Care Center whose concern, encouragement, expertise, laughter, love and tears made the last years of life acceptable. A final thanks to Dr. Jim Stjernholm for the many years he cared for Mary. It was truly a privilege knowing all of you. At Mary's request, cremation has taken place. Memorial Mass, 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Holy Family Church. A reception will follow from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Chateau at Sharmar Village Care Center, 1201 W. Abriendo. Arrowood, Anna H.
Anna H. "Dolly" Arrowood - Pueblo Chieftain - August 28, 1998 - Anna H. "Dolly" Arrowood passed away Aug. 26, 1998, in Pueblo. She was born Aug. 28, 1921, in Pueblo to Edwin Wayman and Harriatt Talbot Wayman. Dolly was a member of the Jolly Gals Bunko Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Trainmen. Dolly enjoyed her stamp and doll collections, but loved nothing as much as her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan, in 1984; and son, Alvin, in 1996. Dolly was the loving mother of Nancy (Jim) Walters; sister, Ed (Jean) Wayman and Lois (Dean) Gray; beloved grandmother of James, Cheryl, Robert and Tammy; and the great-grandmother of Ashley. Also surviving Dolly are numerous other relatives and friends. Visitation for Mrs. Arrowood will be held from noon until 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at the mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, in the Davis Memorial Chapel with Elder Fannie Mae Bernard officiating. Interment will follow in Block 67 of the Roselawn Cemetery.

Arrowood, George W.
George W. Arrowood - Pueblo Chieftain - February 05, 1998 - Restland Funeral Home, Dallas, Texas - George W. Arrowood of Richardson, Texas, born Feb. 4, 1924, in Gatesville, Texas, departed this life on Feb 1, 1998. George was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Lois, of 39 years, whom he loved dearly. While he did not remarry, he was blessed by the love and devotion of friend, Jan Smith, and her son, Rod. He is survived by his daughters, Janice McConnell and Peggy Harlow and sons, Ed and Don- daughters-in-law, Shirley and Suzanne- sons-in-law, Dan McConnell and Rocky Harlow- and sisters, Desree Jordan and Doris Fisk. He was also blessed with grandchildren, Shannon, Melissa and Lauren Harlow, Wendy and Matthew McConnell, Spencer Arrowood and Christy Laney- mother-in-law, Alma Edwards, Avondale- brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Joe and Gerry Centa, Avondale, John and Irene Burton, Aztec, N.M., and Red and Linda Cortner, Pueblo. Our loving father and friend was preceded in death by father-in-law, Merl Edwards- sisters, Eva, Annie and Alvina- brothers, George Alvin, Dan and Anderson- and niece, Debbie Burton. George served our country in World War II as part of the 17th Airborne Division, 515th Parachute Infantry in the Battle of the Bulge. Retired in Dallas as a Motorhome Sales Professional. Arrowood, John A.
John A. Arrowood - Pueblo Chieftain - January 14, 1998 - Scott's Funeral Home Gatesville, Texas John A. Arrowood, 82, of Gatesville, Texas, died Jan. 6, 1998. He was born at Pecan Grove, Texas, Sept. 11, 1915. He was the son of George and Ida Arrowood. He was married to Marie Denny on June 19, 1937. They made their home in Gatesville until 1942, at which time they moved to Pueblo, where he was employed at the CF&I as a mechanic and truck driver. He retired and moved back to Gatesville in 1977. He was a member of the Pecan Grove Baptist Church. Survived by daughters, Sandra Baker, Pueblo, Gail Arrowood, Denver, and Sarah (Bill) Ruddell, Ketchikan, Alaska- grandchildren, John Seven and Sean Holt- brother, George Arrowood, Richardson, Texas- sisters, Desree Jordon, Gatesville, and Doris Fisk, Waco- and lifelong friends, the Browning family. Preceded in death by wife, Clara Marie Arrowood- parents, George Arrowood and Ida Arrowood Richardson- brothers, George Alvin and Dan August- and sisters, Alta Eva, Annie Lena and Sally Alvina. Graveside service was held on Jan. 10 at Davidson Cemetery near Gatesville.

Fields B. Arthur - Pueblo Chieftain – June 19, 1960 - Fields B. Arthur, late of 215 Dunsmere Ave., prominent lifetime resident of Pueblo, passed away at his residence following an illness of three weeks. Co-founder of the Arthur and Allen Company. Attended Bethel Methodist Church, and was a lifetime member of the BPO Elks Lodge 90; a charter member of Pueblo Saddle Club, and the Cattle and Stockmen's Association. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel E. Arthur of the family home, one son, John Arthur, San Diego,Calif.,3 grandsons and 4 great-grandchildren, all of San Diego, and one cousin, Mrs. Ann Sullivan, Pueblo. Services in our chapel, 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Eugene D. Worth, pastor Bethel Methodist Church officiating. Interment family mound, Roselawn Cemetery. Artista, Ann M.
Ann M. (Faiola) Artista - Pueblo Chieftain - April 15, 2006 - Ann M. (Faiola) Artista, 77, passed away April 12, 2006. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Artista; son, David Joseph Artista; parents, John and Elizabeth Faiola; and brother, Frank Faiola. Survived by children, Patricia (Kenneth) Kreie, Brighton, Colo., and Jeanette (Jim) Hardesty, Pueblo; grandchildren, Scott Kreie (Trish O'Toole), Kevin Kreie, Ryan (Kristi) Hardesty and Lisa (Douglas) Sykes; great-grandchildren, Marcus, Shane and Timothy Sykes and Mikey and Kaylee Hardesty; also survived by her sister, Lola (Pat) Griesan of Pueblo; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She loved her dog, Punky, and her trips to Cripple Creek. Most of all she loved being with her family, and cooking for family dinners. Ann will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and most of all for her generous heart. Visitation, 8 to 10 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2006, at the funeral home. Artz, James A.
James A. Artz - Pueblo Chieftain - March 23, 2006 - James A. Artz, 74, passed away March 21, 2006. Preceded in death by his wives, Lillian Anne Artz and Virgy L. Kohrt Swain Artz. Survived by his stepdaughters, Lenore "Charlene" (Laurence) Goetz and Mariem A. Lenfest, both of Pueblo; sister, Virginia Hintz of Fond du Lac, Wis.; brother, William Artz of Two Rivers, Wis.; grandchildren, Michael (Adrienne) Goetz of Pueblo West, John A. Goetz of Alamosa, Paul J. Goetz of Florence, Jeff Scovil of Pueblo, Charles Scovil and Jennifer Scovil, both of Kiowa, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Marcus A. Goetz, Michelle and Megan Scovil; great-great-grandchild, Joseph; numerous nieces and nephews in Wisconsin. James was born to John and Sarah Artz on July 4, 1931, in Manitowoc, Wis. He was career military serving in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed rug making, cooking and baking, especially bread and pizzelles. Jim received much joy in sharing his baked goodies with friends and relatives who in turn appreciated receiving them. He also donated his baked goods to Susan Komen Breast Cancer Research fund-raisers. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, March 24, 2006, Montgomery & Steward Chapel, with Chaplain Melinda Baber officiating. Full military honors by Fort Carson Mountain Post Honor Guard and interment to follow at Imperial Memorial Gardens. Artzberger, Ralph Ewing
Ralph Ewing Artzberger - Pueblo Chieftain - July 23, 1998 - Ralph Ewing Artzberger, longtime Pueblo resident, passed away July 22, 1998. He was a longtime concrete contractor, and was a member of First United Methodist Church, BPOE No. 90, and a past member of the Sertoma Club, Pueblo Boat Club, and stock car racing group, and Minnequa University Club. Mr. Artzberger enjoyed fishing at Twin Lakes and boat racing. He was well-known for fair dealings in all his work, and additional changes were made without charge. He was devoted to his friends and neighbors. Preceded in death by his wife, Velma L. Artzberger- and his son, Myron B. Sonny" Artzberger- and by his granddaughter, Linda Lee Artzberger. Survived by his wife, Glory M. Artzberger, of the family home- three daughters, Viona Artzberger, Beverly A. Carty, and Carol Sue (Robert) Williams, all of Pueblo- nine grandchildren- nine great-grandchildren- numerous nieces and nephews, and many loving and caring friends. Viewing hours are 1-5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral service, 10 a.m. Friday, T.G. McCarthy Rose Chapel, followed by interment at Imperial Memorial Gardens. Those who wish may make contributions to the charity of their choice in memory of Mr. Artzberger.

Arundale, William
William Arundale - Golden Colorado Transcript - March 7, 1900 – A sad accident, or suicide, occurred on the Colorado & Southern at Elk Creek, a few miles west of this city, on Sunday, when Wm Arundale was crushed under the wheels of the train. He was from Hot Sulphur Springs in Middle Park, and had been for some time in the insane asylum at Pueblo, from whence his wife was taking him home, he having been released on trial. All evidence goes to show that there was a relapse of his malady, and that he crawled under the train where he was crushed. Mrs. Arundale is now in Golden, and of course paralyzed by the sad event. She has three small children to share her grief. A brother of Mrs. Arundale came down from Idaho Springs and took charge of the remains, which will be interred at Mr. Olivet tomorrow.
